Characteristics of Dorset culture art based on chosen sites and artifacts

Tematem, wokół którego skupia się praca jest scharakteryzowanie najważniejszych cech sztuki identyfikowanej z działaniem kultury Dorset głównie na obszarze arktycznej Kanady. Na charakterystykę składa się przedstawienie przede wszystkim podstawowych, najczęściej pojawiających się motywów, takich jak chociażby częste zdobienie figurek w sposób nawiązujący do szkieletu. Poruszone zostają również kwestie typowych materiałów wykorzystywanych w produkcji codziennych przedmiotów, przede wszystkim artefaktów utożsamianych ze sztuką kultury Dorset. Praca zawiera również szeroki opis stanowisk takich jak: Abverdjar, Alarnerk, wyspa Shuldham, Button Point, Tayara oraz Qajartalik. Każde z nich reprezentuje coś niezwykłego, począwszy od fragmentów bębnów, poprzez sztukę naskalną aż po różnorodne figurki zarówno antropomorficzne, jak i zoomorficzne. Opis stanowisk poprzedza także krótka oraz ogólna charakterystyka kultury Dorset, wyjaśniająca tryb życia owej społeczności, który dostosowany był do ciężkich warunków arktycznego klimatu.

The subject of the paper is to characterize the most important features of art identified with the activity of the Dorset culture, mainly in the Arctic Canada. The characteristics include the presentation of the basics such as most frequently appearing motifs such as, for example, the reaccuring decoration of figurines reffering to the skeleton. Also discussed are the issues of typical materials used in the production of everyday items, primarily artifacts associated with the art of Dorset culture. The paper also includes a broad description of archaeological sites such as Abverdjar, Alarnerk, Shuldham Island, Button Point, Tayara and Qajartalik. Each of them represents something extraordinary, ranging from wooden drum fragments, through rock art, to a huge variation of anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figurines. The sites’ description i salso preceded by a brief and short description of the Dorset culture itself, explaining the lifestyle of this community and their adaptation to the harsh condition of the Arctic climate.
