Niesienie ulgi w cierpieniu, powiązane z okazywaniem troskliwości, jest podstawowym zadaniem pielęgniarki. Zobowiązanie do bycia godnym zaufania, wspierane etyczną zasadą wierności, stanowi dodatkowy aspekt podstawowej odpowiedzialności za łagodzenie cierpienia chorego. Odpowiedzialność pielęgniarki za łagodzenie cierpienia oznacza troskliwą pomoc w znoszeniu cierpienia fizycznego oraz psychicznego każdego pacjenta niezależnie od różnic kulturowych lub poglądów religijnych. Pielęgniarka paliatywna pełni dużo funkcji w opiece nad pacjentem w terminalnej fazie choroby, a są nimi: funkcja zabiegowa, pielęgnacyjna, psychologiczna, edukacyjna oraz wychowawcza. Jest obecna przy chorym i jego rodzinie podczas umierania i śmierci, ponieważ wszystkie jej działania zmierzają do poprawy jakości kończącego się życia, oraz udzieleniu wsparcia jego rodzinie.
