Problem ekwiwalencji kulturowej w powieści Doroty Masłowskiej pt. „Wojna polsko-ruska pod flagą biało-czerwoną” i w jej angielskim tłumaczeniu

Celem niniejszej pracy magisterskiej jest analiza problemu ekwiwalencji kulturowej na podstawie powieści Doroty Masłowskiej pt. „Wojna polsko-ruska pod flagą biało-czerwoną” i jej angielskiego tłumaczenia pt. „White and Red”.Rozdział pierwszy poświęcony jest analizie literackiej „Wojny polsko-ruskiej” i dowodzi, iż książka jest mocno osadzona w polskich realiach kulturowych, co generuje problemy w tłumaczeniu na inne języki. Rozdział ten zawiera ogólny opis fabuły, języka oraz świata przedstawionego w powieści. Celem rozdziału drugiego jest wyjaśnienie pojęcia ekwiwalencji kulturowej i ukazanie trudności wynikających z tłumaczenia tekstów osadzonych w specyficznej kulturze. W rozdziale tym omówiono następujące zagadnienia dotyczące ekwiwalencji kulturowej: definicja ekwiwalencji, teoria wielosystemowa, nieprzekładalność kulturowa oraz główne strategie i procedury tłumaczeniowe.W rozdziale trzecim dokonano analizy porównawczej „Wojny polsko-ruskiej” i jej angielskiego tłumaczenia na podstawie głównych strategii tłumaczeniowych (udomowienie i egzotyzacja) oraz pozostałych strategii i procedur. Rozdział ten obejmuje swoim zakresem przykłady dotyczące tłumaczenia kulturowego takich problemów, jak: nazwy własne, odniesienia do literatury, idiomy i powiedzenia, wulgaryzmy oraz wyrażenia należące do dyskursu młodzieżowego.

The purpose of this thesis is to analyse the problem of cultural equivalence on the basis of Dorota Masłowska’s novel: Wojna polsko-ruska pod flagą biało-czerwoną and its English translation White and Red.The first chapter aims at presenting a literary analysis of Wojna polsko-ruska and proves that the novel is deeply set in the specific Polish culture which is difficult to be reconstructed in another language. The chapter begins with a general description of the plot to show the background for the subsequent literary analysis of the novel. Then, on the basis of several critical analyses and reviews of the book, the meaning and reception of Wojna polsko-ruska is explored. The second chapter aims at explaining the notion of cultural equivalence and showing restrictions which make such translation an extremely challenging process. This chapter provides comprehensive definitions and examples of various aspects related to the problem of cultural equivalence: the definition of equivalence, the main translation strategies and procedures, polysystem theory and the notion of cultural untranslatability. The third chapter focuses on a comparative analysis of Wojna polsko-ruska and its English translation on the basis of general translation strategies (domestication and foreignisation) and a number of more specific techniques or procedures. The chapter provides various examples of cultural peculiarities and their respectful translations covering the following cultural problems: proper names, literary references, idioms and common sayings, vulgarisms and expressions relating to the youth discourse.
