Authoritarianism or democracy. Singapore's political system in the context of Asian Values.

The issues raised in this work concerns the universality of the term democracy. The official ideology of 'Asian values' was strongly promoted by political leaders of Singapore, as they were trying to relativize the perception of human rights, civil liberties or the democratic system itself. Creators of this concept argue that Asian societies are not able to accept the principles of Western liberal democracy based on individualism. The basic assumption of the program of Asian values is an attempt to restore traditional values. In the case of Singapore,the system had to be based on Confucian thought. Construction of the mentioned programme was accompanied by the conviction of superiority of based on collectivism Asian societies. What's more, defined catalog of Asian values was made not only to highlight the differences between East and West, but to create political justification of political system of Singapore. The main goal of this study is to assess the impact of distributed concept of Asian values on shape of the political system in Singapore.

Problematyka poruszana w pracy dotyczy uniwersalizmu terminu demokracja. Oficjalna ideologia „wartości azjatyckich”, silnie promowana przez przywódców politycznych Singapuru, próbuje niejako zrelatywizować postrzeganie praw człowieka, wolności obywatelskich czy też samego ustroju demokratycznego. Twórcy powyższej koncepcji argumentują, iż społeczeństwa azjatyckie nie są w stanie przyjąć zasad zachodniej demokracji liberalnej opartej na indywidualizmie. Zasadnicze założenie programu wartości azjatyckich to próba odtworzenia tradycyjnego systemu wartości. W wypadku Singapuru wspomniany system wartości miał być oparty na myśli konfucjańskiej. Budowie powyższego programu towarzyszyło przekonanie o wyższości opartych na kolektywizmie społeczeństw azjatyckich nad zdominowanym przez indywidualizm i niezależność społeczeństw szeroko pojmowanego zachodu. Co więcej, zdefiniowany katalog wartości azjatyckich miał nie tylko na celu podkreślenie różnic między Wschodem, a Zachodem, ale wręcz uzasadnienie polityczno - prawnego kształtu Singapuru. Głównym założeniem niniejszej pracy jest ocena wpływu rozpowszechnianej koncepcji wartości azjatyckich na kształt ustroju politycznego w Singapurze.
