Does Volunteering increase Understanding? The presence of Intercultural Communicative Competence within European Voluntary Service framework.

Zadaniem niniejszej pracy jest refleksja nad procesem komunikacji w środowisku międzykulturowym, które staje się dziś udziałem każdego mieszkańca nie tylko Europy,ale i naszej planety. Celem szczegółowym jest zaś analiza występowania dyspozycji ułatwiających przebieg dialogu w środowisku Wolontariatu Europejskiego.Dwa pierwsze rozdziały skupiają się na komunikacji i kulturze, służyć mają zarysowaniu siatki pojęciowej, która będziemy się posługiwać w dalszej analizie.Rozdział trzeci przedstawia historie powstania i rozwoju badan nowej dziedziny naukowej, powstałej w wyniku zwrócenia uwagi na kulturowe uwarunkowania procesu komunikacji w ubiegłym stuleciu. Prezentuje również teorie wybranych przedstawicieli nurtu komunikacji międzykulturowej, ukazując złożoność zagadnienia.Rozdział czwarty stanowi dwojakie rozważania nad zagadnieniem tożsamości: w odniesieniu do komunikacji oraz na temat ‘tożsamości europejskiej’.W kolejnej części pracy próbujemy zdefiniować tytułowa kompetencje posługując się przedstawionymi wcześniej teoriami.Ponieważ zamierzamy zająć się zagadnieniem komunikacji w specyficznym środowisku, jakim jest projekt Wolontariatu Europejskiego (European Voluntary Service, EVS), a zatem kolejny rozdział przedstawia pokrótce historie działań wolontaryjnych w Europie, omawiając następnie specyfikę tej konkretnej inicjatywy Komisji Europejskiej skierowanej do młodzieży. Zwracamy uwagę na ogólne cele projektu - rozwijanie poczucia solidarności oraz promowanie aktywności obywatelskiej i wzajemnego zrozumienia wśród młodzieży omawiamy także jego szczególne priorytety.W tej kolejnej części pracy przedstawimy aspekt edukacyjny EVS oraz certyfikat Youth Pass, będący poświadczeniem rezultatów procesu uczenia się wolontariusza w trakcie projektu, który to dokument posłuży nam do analizy badawczej.Badanie i jego rezultaty zostaną omówione w ostatnim, dziewiątym rozdziale.

The purpose of this study is to consider communication process in the intercultural enviroment, something that becomes today an experience of every person, not only in Europe, but around the globe. The main intention is to analize the occurence of intercultural communicative competence in the European Voluntary Service's (EVS) environment .First two chapters focus on the notions of 'communication' and 'culture', both serve to sketch the conceptual framework that will be used in further analysis.Chapter three presents the history of the emergence and development of new field of study, one that arose in result of attention shift towards cultural influences on communication.Chapter four contains twofold consideration of the concept of identity - with reference to communication, and to the European identity Further parts of the paper try to define the title competence using presented theories.The intention of this study is to explore communication in a specific enviroment (EVS), hence the next chapter describes a brief history of volunteering in Europe, discussing the specifics of this particular initiative of the European Commission addressed to the youth.We intend to analize the project’s main purposes - developing solidarity, promotion of an active citizenship and mutual understanding among young people and also present project specific priorities.The following chapter's purpose is to present non- formal educational aspect of EVS, it also introduces Youth Pass Certificate - a document that shows volounteer's skills development during the programme. Youth Pass Certificates of various volunteers have been analysed for this research.The final, ninth chapter presents the results of the study and its conclusions. We claim that intercultural communicative competence is underappreciated in the EU innitiative.
