Austrian-Polish Cracow operation (June-August 1657)

The first military operation of the Northern War, in which Austrian troops participated, was the recapture of Cracow. Around 16,000 soldiers under Leopold I took part in the operation, which - from June to August 1657 - led to the expulsion of Swedish forces from Cracow. Initially, the allied forces halted the march of George II Rákóczi towards Cracow and retook Pińczów. The allies then proceeded to lay siege to Cracow, which then concluded on August 30 with the withdrawal of the Swedish garrison from the city. The battle followed the typical siege warfare tactics of the 17th century. Neither the besieging nor the defending side sought a decisive resolution through direct engagements. A significant challenge arose from the difficult cooperation between Polish and Austrian commanders, as well as shortages in supplies. The Austrian-Polish collaboration during this period illustrates the issues faced by siege armies at the time, as well as the challenges of coordination between allies.
