Praca dotyczy roli niewiarygodnej narracji w Alias Grace Margaret Atwood, Kiedy byliśmy sierotami Kazuo Ishiguro oraz w Zanim zasnę S.J. Watsona. Praca skupia się na oznakach niewiarygodności, wpływie niewiarygodnej narracji na czytelnika oraz relacji pomiędzy pojęciem nierzetelnego narratora a motywem poszukiwania prawdy. We wstępie zamieszczono wyjaśnienie pojęcia niewiarygodności w oparciu o prace Wayne’a Claysona Bootha, Ansgara Nünninga, Petera J. Rabinowitza, Grety Olson, Very Nünning i Williama Riggana. Na podstawie tych prac w kolejnych rozdziałach analizuję funkcjonowanie zjawiska niewiarygodnego narratora w trzech wspomnianych powieściach. Tematy poruszane w pracy obejmują: emocjonalny wpływ niewiarygodnego narratora na czytelnika i jego/jej wpływ na poziom zaufania czytelnika; motyw rozczarowania w procesie poszukiwania prawdy; rola wspomnień; zmienny/niestabilny charakter niewiarygodnej narracji i dydaktyczny cel takich narratorów. Oprócz tego w rozdziale poświęconym Alias Grace omówiono także wykorzystanie nierzetelnego narratora w celu dokładniejszego przedstawienia postaci historycznej. Następny rozdział, skupiający się na powieści S.J. Watsona, bada powiązania pomiędzy niewiarygodnością narracji a literackim przedstawieniem amnezji. Natomiast w części poświęconej powieści Kazuo Ishiguro analizuję motyw traumy z dzieciństwa jako możliwą przyczynę niewiarygodności narratora. W zakończeniu pracy stwierdzam, że niewiarygodna narracja jest intrygującym zjawiskiem literackim, wzbogacającym doświadczenie czytelnicze i stwarzającym wiele możliwości do pogłębionej analizy.

The thesis explores the role of unreliable narration in Margaret Atwood’s Alias Grace, Kazuo Ishiguro’s When We Were Orphans and S.J.Watson’s Before I Go To Sleep. The dissertation focuses on the signs of unreliability, the effects of unreliable narration on the reader and the relation between the notion of the fallible or untrustworthy narrator and the motif of the search for truth. The introductory chapter provides an explanation of the notion of unreliability based on the works of Wayne Clayson Booth, Ansgar Nünning, Peter J. Rabinowitz, Greta Olson, Vera Nünning and William Riggan. Drawing on these works, in the consecutive chapters I analyze how unreliability functions in the three aforementioned novels. The themes discussed in the thesis include: the emotional impact of unreliability on the reader and how it affects the reader’s level of trust; the motif of the characters’ disappointment/disillusionment in the process of the search for truth; the role of memories; the shifting/unstable nature of narratorial unreliability and the didactic purpose of unreliable narrators. Apart from that, the chapter on Alias Grace also discusses how a fallible narrator is used to create a more accurate portrayal of a historical figure. The next chapter, which focuses on S.J.Watson’s novel, explores the links between narratorial unreliability and a literary depiction of amnesia. Subsequently, in the part dedicated to Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel I analyze the motif of childhood trauma as the possible reason behind the narrator’s fallibility. In the concluding section the thesis states that unreliability is an intriguing literary phenomenon which enriches the reading experience and presents many opportunities for an in-depth analysis.
