Religious Shift in Latin America. The Increasing Importance of Pentecostalism

Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza przemian religijnych zachodzących współcześnie w Ameryce Łacińskiej i próba dotarcia do przyczyn tak gwałtownego wzrostu zainteresowania protestantyzmem, a szczególnie jego odmianą pentekostalną. W celu przedstawienia przyczyn masowych nawróceń w Ameryce Łacińskiej pracę podzielono na trzy rozdziały. Pierwszy poświęcony został na wprowadzenie teoretyczne i wyjaśnienie czym jest sama religia. Następnie przedstawiona została typologia organizacji religijnych oraz kolejne etapy ich powstawania: od najprostszych grup religijnych aż do kościoła zinstytucjonalizowanego. W tym rozdziale zaprezentowano również historię protestantyzmu od czasu reformacji oraz proces tworzenia kolejnych denominacji. Rozdział zakończony jest szczegółowym opisem historii i doktryny pentekostalizmu. W drugim rozdziale przedstawiono historię pojawienia się katolicyzmu i protestantyzmu w Ameryce Łacińskiej oraz badania nad liczebnością protestantów, w tym pentekostalistów, na kontynencie. Ostatni rozdział skupia się na przyczynach tak dużej popularności zielonoświątkowców oraz szczegółowym opisie poszczególnych hipotez.

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the contemporary religious change in Latin America and to find the roots of such rapid growth of Protestantism, especially in its Pentecostal form. The dissertation is divided into three main chapters to present the origin of the mass conversions in Latin America,. The first chapter presents the theoretical background and the definition of religion. In the following section, the typology of religious organizations and the consecutive stages of their evolution are presented – from the simple religious groups to the institutional church. The last unit of the chapter describes in detail the history and the doctrine of the Pentecostal Church, following the history of Protestantism from the Reformation and the process of creating new denominations. The second chapter is devoted to the history of Catholicism and Protestantism in Latin America. The following unit comprises the study of the number of Protestants, including Pentecostals in the continent. The third chapter analyzes the roots of such popularity of Pentecostals and describes the relevant hypothesis.
