Foreignization versus domestication. Translation of culture-specific items in the novel Mulata de tal by Miguel Ángel Asturias.

Przekład elementów kulturowych stanowi wyzwanie dla tłumacza literatury. Powieść 'Niejaka mulatka' Miguela Ángela Asturiasa wyróżnia się egzotyzmem, ponieważ została napisana dla uwiecznienia legend y folkloru Majów. Głównym celem niniejszej pracy naukowej jest określenie strategii przekładu elementów nacechowanych kulturowo. Na potrzeby tej analizy używa się pojęcia egzotyzacji y udomowienia Venutiego, traktowane jako dwa przeciwległe bieguny swoistego continuum. W części teoretycznej kontrastuje się teorie Bermana z podejście funkcjonalnym. Jako narzędzie do klasyfikacji wybranych elementów kultowych użyto tabelę z kategoriami przygotowaną w oparciu o teorię Newmarka i Igaredy. W części analitycznej identyfikuje się procedury zastosowane przez tłumacza w celu dokonania oceny jego kreatywności. W przeprowadzonym badaniu wyraża się uznanie dla talentu Andrzeja Nowaka. Rezultat analizy pozwala na posunięcie się do wniosku, że przekład ma tendencję do egzotyzacji.

The translation of culture-specific items is a challenge for the translator of literature. The novel ‘Mulata de tal’ by Miguel Ángel Asturias is full of exoticism, because it was written to preserve the folklore and legends of the Mayans. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to determine which strategy was used for translating culture-specific items. To that end, Venuti’s concepts of foreignization and domestication are employed as opposite poles of the continuum. In the theoretical part, Berman's ideas are presented in contrast to the functionalist approach. Also, the categorization of culture-specific items is based on the concepts of Newmark and Igareda. In the analysis part, the procedures applied in the translation are identified in order to evaluate the creative work of the Polish translator. The final result of the analysis allows to notice the tendency for foreignization, as well as to appreciate Andrzej Nowak’s translation talents.

La traducción de los elementos culturales constituye un desafío para el traductor de literatura. La novela 'Mulata de tal' de Miguel Ángel Asturias está llena del exotismo, porque fue escrita para preservar las leyendas folclóricas de los mayas. Así, el objetivo fundamental del presente estudio es determinar la estrategia por la que optó Andrzej Nowak a la hora de traducir los elementos culturales. Para eso, se utiliza las nociones de extranjerización y domesticación de Venuti, entendidas como polos opuestos entre los cuales se sitúa el proceso de traducción. En la parte teorética, se presenta las ideas de Berman en contraste con el enfoque funcionalista. Asimismo, se propone la categorización de los elementos culturales a base de los conceptos de Newmark y Igareda. En la parte de análisis, se identifica los procedimientos aplicados en la traducción con el objetivo de evaluar el trabajo creativo de Andrzej Nowak. El resultado final del análisis permite tanto notar una cierta tendencia a la extranjerización, como también apreciar el talento del traductor polaco.
