The Boundaries of Communication in Cross-cultural Communicating. The Japanese versus the Europeans

This BA thesis, The Boundaries of Communication in Cross-cultural Communicating. The Japanese versus the Europeans, was yielded by the fascination of how convoluted the cross-cultural communication is, how many aspects it has and how easily it may be disturbed. Its main aim is endeavouring to create a list of possible obstacles in communication between the representatives of two completely disparate worlds, the Europe and the Japan, which exist far away from each other. This issue has an open character which means that it will certainly not explore the topic entirely. It is generally known that it is impossible to foresee the communicating processes for they start spontaneously and, apart from that, evolve at the same time as human does. The obstacles, which are analyzed in this MA thesis, are divided into cultural, linguistic and environmental factors. Such a division of factors disturbing communication between the inhabitants of Europe and Japan has imposed a certain composition of this project. Firstly, it involves a theoretical introduction which elucidates some terms and concepts that are crucial for the researched issue, and then there are three analytical chapters. In the analytical part, the first chapter examines linguistic factors in both verbal and non-verbal communication, while the second charter deals with cultural obstacles, and the third one explores geographical, historical and civilization conditions. The whole MA thesis puts into consideration the enormously wide picture of possibilities of leading a dialogue between the two chosen cultures – the Japanese and the European, both in practical and theoretical sense. The composition of this research essay includes not only wide bibliography but also personal observations, led conversations and interactions in which the author participated or witnessed between June, 2009 and July, 2010, when studying at the Yamas Institute in Japan. The approached methodology is the way of describing certain phenomena, which allows to present and analyze the chosen communicating obstacles in the best manner.

Niniejsza praca, Bariery komunikacyjne w komunikowaniu międzykulturowym. Japończycy a Europejczycy, wyrasta z fascynacji tym, jak bardzo skomplikowane i wielowymiarowe jest komunikowanie międzykulturowe i jak łatwo napotyka ono na różnego rodzaju przeszkody. Jej zasadniczy cel stanowi próba stworzenia listy ewentualnych barier w komunikacji przedstawicieli dwóch odległych od siebie światów – Europy i Japonii. Owo zestawienie mieć będzie charakter otwarty czyli nie wyczerpie całości tematu. Z oczywistych powodów nie da się bowiem przewidzieć procesów komunikacyjnych, które w większości odbywają się spontanicznie i do tego ewoluują razem z człowiekiem. Bariery analizowane w tej pracy zostały podzielone na czynniki kulturowe, językowe i środowiskowe. Taki podział bodźców zaburzających komunikowanie się Japończyków i Europejczyków narzucił określoną kompozycję pracy. W pierwszej kolejności składa się na nią wprowadzenie teoretyczne, wyjaśniające terminy i koncepcje najważniejsze dla podejmowanego tematu, a następnie trzy rozdziały analityczne. W części analitycznej I rozdział rozpatruje czynniki językowe w komunikowaniu werbalnym i niewerbalnym, II – wybrane bariery kulturowe, III – uwarunkowania geograficzne, historyczne i cywilizacyjne. Całość pracy uwzględnia maksymalnie szeroki obraz możliwości prowadzenia dialogu pomiędzy obiema wybranymi kulturami – japońską i europejską, zarówno w ujęciu praktycznym, jak i czysto teoretycznym. Materiał badawczy niniejszej pracy stanowi zarówno bogata literatura przedmiotu, jak i osobiste obserwacje, odbyte rozmowy oraz interakcje, których autor był uczestnikiem bądź świadkiem w okresie od czerwca 2009 do lipca 2010 roku, podczas rocznej nauki w Instytucie Yamasa w Japonii. Przyjętą metodologią jest forma opisywania konkretnych zjawisk, pozwalająca na najlepszy sposób prezentacji i analizy przykładowych barier komunikacyjnych.
