THE JEWISH ACTOR’S IDENTITY

W niniejszej pracy magisterskiej zostały podjęte próby uchwycenia i opisania tytułowej tożsamości aktora żydowskiego. Autorka zastanawia się nad zmianą jego funkcji na przestrzeni wieków – od początku powstania teatru żydowskiego, przez teatr XVIII i XIX wieku, a na warszawskim Teatrze Żydowskim kończąc. Swoje rozważania zaczyna od teatralności świąt żydowskich (Purim, Pesach i Jom Kippur), aby wskazać genezę teatru żydowskiego. Mimo nawiązań do innych grup teatralnych, np. krakowskiego teatru żydowskiego, to Teatr Żydowski w Warszawie jest najważniejszym punktem odniesień poniższej pracy. Autorka wybrała trzy spektakle (Aktorów żydowskich w reżyserii Anny Smolar, Dybuka w reżyserii Mai Kleczewskiej oraz One same w reżyserii Karoliny Kirsz), które poddała wnikliwej analizie pod kątem prezentowania w nich żydowskiej tożsamości, a co za tym idzie: tożsamości aktora żydowskiego. Głównym celem całej pracy jest próba znalezienia odpowiedzi na przewijające się przez wszystkie jej rozdziały pytanie: kim dzisiaj jest aktor żydowski?

The present MA thesis is an attempt to capture the essence of and describe the title identity of the Jewish actor. The author reflects upon the evolution of the role of the Jewish actor throughout the history, from the beginnings of the Jewish theatre through the 18th and 19th centuries, and the contemporary Ester Rachel Kamińska and Ida Kamińska State Jewish Theater in Warsaw. The first part of the thesis sets out to trace the origins of the Jewish theatre as such to the theatrical nature of the Jewish festivals, most notably the Passover, Purim and Yom Kippur. Although different troupes, for instance the Jewish theatre in Kraków, are also mentioned, the Jewish theatre in Warsaw remains the main point of focus. Three productions in particular (Aktorzy żydowscy directed by Anna Smolar, S. Ansky's The Dybbuk directed by Maja Kleczewska and One Same directed by Karolina Kirsz) are thoroughly analysed from the point of view of their way of presenting the Jewish identity and, in consequence, the identity of the Jewish actor as well. The main aim of the thesis as a whole is finding the answer to the question that permeates all its chapters: who is the Jewish actor today?
