From television to Netflix - an impact of changing the medium on the british animated series

Celem mojej pracy licencjackiej jest opisanie, w jaki sposób zmiana medium w postaci przeniesienia się telewizji do internetu wpłynęła na brytyjski serial animowany. Odpowiadam na pytania, czy na przestrzeni lat zmian zmienił się sposób animowania, na co zwracano uwagę podczas tworzenia animacji w erze dominacji telewizji, a na czym skupiają się twórcy animacji dzisiaj. Porównuję, jakie czynniki wpływały na popularność produkcji w przeszłości, a jakie narzędzia wykorzystywane są dzisiaj, a także czy i jak zmieniło się postrzeganie animacji dla dzieci, kiedy każdy ma do niej dostęp. Aby odpowiedzieć na te pytania, w pierwszym rozdziale mojej pracy przywołuję krótką historię mediów brytyjskich od prasy do nowszych technologii telewizyjnych – ma to na celu wytłumaczenie, na czym polega specyfika brytyjskiej telewizji, która w przeciwieństwie do rynku amerykańskiego, uzależniona jest od nadawcy publicznego. W drugim rozdziale porównuję dwie brytyjskie animacje z różnych okresów rozwoju telewizji w Zjednoczonym Królestwie: Pingu (1986-2006), który jest animacją z ery renesansu animacji brytyjskiej oraz Świnkę Peppę (2004-obecnie), która jest przykładem produkcji w zmieniającym się środowisku medialnym między telewizją lat 2000 a zaistnieniem animacji na platformach streamingowych. Ostatni rozdział poświęcony jest przejęciu animacji dla dzieci przez użytkowników Internetu pod postacią używania podwójnego kodowania, na przykład pod postacią memów czy innych przerobionych materiałów.

The aim of my BA thesis is to describe how the change of medium in the form of the transfer of television to the Internet has influenced the British animated series. I answer the questions of whether the way of animating has changed over the years, what was paid attention to when creating animations in the era of television domination, and what is the focus of animation creators today. I compare which factors influenced the popularity of the production in the past and what tools are used today as well as whether and how the perception of animation for children has changed when everyone has access to it. To answer these questions, in the first chapter of my work I recall a short history of British media from the press to newer television technologies - this is to explain the specificity of British television which, unlike the US market, depends on the public broadcaster. In the second chapter I compare two British animations from different periods during the development of television in the United Kingdom: Pingu (1986-2006), which is an animation from the era of British animation renaissance, and Peppa Pig (2004-present), which is an example of production in the changing media environment between television from the 2000s and the emergence of animation on streaming platforms. The last chapter is devoted to the takeover of children's animation by Internet users in the form of using double coding, for example in the form of memes or other transformative materials.
