Niniejsza praca analizuje reprezentacje męskości przedstawione w wierszu Pan Gawen i Zielony Rycerz i jego adaptacji filmowej Zielony Rycerz. Rozdział pierwszy omawia kontekst historyczny, w którym rozwijały się ideały męskości - w średniowieczu, jak i od XIX wieku. Rozdział drugi został przeznaczony na analizę męskich postaci w wierszu Pan Gawen i Zielony Rycerz i filmie Zielony Rycerz, zwracając szczególną uwagę na postać Gawena - protagonisty, którego męskość jest główną kwestią poruszaną przez oba dzieła. Przedstawiona w pracy analiza wiersza wyjaśnia, dlaczego oczekiwania stawiane przed Gawenem są niemożliwe do spełnienia, a analiza filmu ukazuje, że dążenie do osiągnięcia ustalonego ideału jest szkodliwe dla jego dobrostanu. Próby spełnienia owych oczekiwań skutkują zrujnowanym poczuciem własnej wartości dla obu protagonistów. Wnioski owej dyskusji wskazują więc na negatywne efekty stereotypów męskości oraz prób dopasowania się do nich.

This thesis examines the representations of masculinity as depicted in the poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and its film adaptation The Green Knight. The first chapter offers a discussion of the historical context in which masculine ideals developed in the Middle Ages, and then it shows how these ideals changed during the 19th century and after. The second chapter is devoted to the analysis of the male characters in the two works – Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and its film adaptation The Green Knight - with special focus on Gawain, the protagonist whose manhood is the main concern of both the poem and the film. The analysis traces the manner in which the expectations put on Gawain in the poem are impossible to achieve, while the examination of the film shows that striving to achieve the prescribed ideal is harmful to the well-being of the character. Aiming to reach these expectations results in a shattered sense of self for both protagonists. The conclusions of the discussion thus point to the negative effects of masculine stereotypes and the attempts to align with them.
