Magic realism in the works of Mo Yan and Olga Tokarczuk — a Case Study on Frog and Primeval and Other Times

Realizm magiczny ma swoje miejsce w literaturze, a niektórzy jego twórcy otrzymali literacką Nagrodę Nobla. W niniejszej pracy przedstawiona zostanie recepcja realizmu magicznego w Chinach i w Polsce, reprezentujący ten nurt autorzy Mo Yan i Olga Tokarczuk oraz charakterystyka dwóch ich dzieł. Oboje oni stosują w swoich utworach podobne lub identyczne techniki, takie jak odwołania do mitologii, stałe miejsca akcji, niechronologiczny rozwój fabuły i wykorzystanie symbolicznych toposów, co pozwoli lepiej połączyć chińskie i polskie doświadczenia w dziedzinie literatury.

Magical realism has its place in literature, and some of its authors have won the Nobel Prize in Literature. This paper will present the reception of magic realism in China and Poland, the represented authors Mo Yan and Olga Tokarczuk and the characteristics of two selected works in the light of this fact and phenomenon. They use similar or identical techniques in their works, such as references to mythology, fixed places of action, non-chronological development of the plot and the use of symbolic toposes, which will help to better connect the Chinese and Polish literary experiences.
