The paper addresses the question of a comparative analysis of data concerning Polish SMEs against the background of SMEs properties in selected “old” EU member countries. The dimension of comparison is defined as “modernity”. Modernity index is constructed on the basis of the reinterpretation of existing empirical data by ascribing weights to characteristics reported in research on SMEs.
