Measuring population living standards. GDP per capita or alternative measures of well-being.

Niniejsza praca składa się z trzech rozdziałów i podejmuje problematykę związaną z obecnym sposobem pomiaru dobrobytu społeczeństwa. Tematyka skupia się na przedstawieniu PKB per capita jako głównej miary jakości życia oraz na nowo powstających alternatywnych narzędziach pomiaru. Celem tej pracy jest analiza dostępnych metod pomiaru ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem miar alternatywnych, które stwarzają nowe możliwości ocenydobrobytu. Następnie porównanie ich z PKB per capita, aby odpowiedzieć na pytanie: które narzędzia lepiej obrazują poziom dobrobytu.Do opracowania niniejszej pracy korzystano z materiałów źródłowych z literatury naukowej, artykułów i opracowań specjalistycznych oraz informacji dostępnych w Internecie na specjalistycznych stronach.Po analizie zgromadzonego materiału, skonstruowano taksonomiczną miarę dobrobytu, która została wykorzystana do porównania i przeanalizowaniaosiągniętych wyników oraz zależności występującymi pomiędzy tymi miarami.Otrzymane wyniki wskazują, że PKB per capita, nie obrazuje faktycznego poziomu dobrobytu, ale ze względu na ogólną dostępność wydaje się stanowić obecnie najlepsze źródło informacji o średniej zamożności społeczeństwa. Alternatywne miary, które są ciągle ulepszane i dotykają wielu płaszczyzn życia, wydają się w lepszym stopniu obrazować poziom dobrobytu.

This thesis consists of three chapters and addresses issues related to the current way of measuring the well-being of society. The main topic is to present GDP per capita as the main measure of quality of life and also to present new emerging alternative measurement tools.The purpose of this work is to analyze the available measurement methods with a particular focus on alternative measures that provide new opportunities to depict well-being. It is also to compare them with GDP per capita in order to evaluate and answer the question: which tools better illustrate the level of wellbeing.Source materials used to develop this paper were taken from the scientific literature, articles, and specialized studies, as well as from information available on the Internet on specialized sites.After analyzing the collected material, a taxonomic measure of well-being was constructed. It was used to compare and analyze the outcomes and the relationships that exist between the measures.The results indicate that GDP per capita does not illustrate the actual level of prosperity, but due to its general availability it seems to be the best source of information about the average wealth of the society at the moment. Alternative measures, which are constantly being improved and touch on many dimensions of life, seem to provide a better picture of well-being.
