Praca analizuje problemy Libanu i jego społeczeństwa poruszone w powieści Ġādy As-Sammān Koszmary Bejrutu. Po krótkim wstępie, który ma na celu przedstawienie pisarki oraz krótką charakterystykę jej twórczości, a także wprowadzeniu historycznym omawiane są zagadnienia związana z funkcjonowaniem organizmu państwowego, kondycją społeczeństwa, rolą religii, strukturą ekonomiczną oraz emancypacją kobiet. Główny wniosek nasuwający się po lekturze Koszmarów Bejrutu to przekonanie, że podziały religijne i wiara sama w sobie jest jedynie maską dla prawdziwych źródeł konfliktu, które mają podłoże ekonomiczne.

The paper tries to examine problems of Lebanon and its society described in the novel Beirut Naightmares by Ġāda As-Sammān. After short introduction presenting basic facts about writer’s life, characteristics of her works and historical background related to Lebanese civil war it describes functioning of the state, politics of Lebanon, situation of the society, role of religion, economic issues and problem of women’s liberation. It makes the reader coming to the conclusion, that the religious divisions and faith itself are nothing, but a mask covering the real roots of the conflict, which are strictly connected to the economic problems.
