Impulsivity and perceived values and their association with the tendency to smoke cigarettes among young adults.

Palenie papierosów wśród młodzieży stanowi aktualny i istotny problem współczesnego społeczeństwa. Mechanizmy i uwarunkowania inicjacji palenia papierosów i innych wyrobów tytoniowych oraz uzależnia od nikotyny wśród adolescentów są ważnym przedmiotem zainteresowania badań psychologicznych. Zweryfikowanie możliwych zależności i uwarunkowań osobowościowych palących adolescentów może usprawnić oraz odpowiednio ukierunkować działania profilaktyczne i terapeutyczne.Celem niniejszego badania było sprawdzenie, czy istnieją istotne różnice pomiędzy młodzieżą palącą, palącą czasami oraz niepalącą w zakresie impulsywności oraz uznawanych wartości. Dodatkowo, badano związek uzależnienia od papierosów z odnotowywanym przez badanych osłabieniem zdolności poznawczych, takich jak problemy z koncentracją. Zweryfikowano również istotność aspektu społecznego palenia wśród adolescentów.W badaniu online wzięło udział 282 uczniów szkół ponadpodstawowych oraz studentów w przedziale wiekowym od 15 do 21 lat. Wśród nich wyróżnione zostały trzy grupy: palących, palących czasami i niepalących.Wyniki badania nie wykazały istotnych różnic w zakresie impulsywności pomiędzy grupami oraz wskazały na pewne trendy dotyczące różnic uznawanych wartości pomiędzy grupami palących, palących czasami i niepalących osób. Potwierdzono także znaczenie otoczenia palących uczestników badania. Uzyskane wyniki wskazują na pewne różnice pomiędzy grupami, a także możliwe uwarunkowania osobowościowe palących adolescentów, jednak nie pozwala to na wyciągnięcie jednoznacznych wniosków o bezpośrednich zależnościach.

Smoking among young people is a current and significant problem in modern society. The mechanisms and determinants of smoking initiation and nicotine addiction among adolescents are important subjects of psychological research. Studying potential relationship and personality traits among adolescent smokers can enhance and properly direct preventive and therapeutic interventions.This study aimed to examine whether there are significant differences in impulsivity and recognized values between youth, who smoke regularly, occasional smokers, and non-smokers. Additionally, the study examined the relationship between cigarette addiction and reported cognitive impairments, such as concentration problems, among the participants. The social aspect of smoking among adolescents was also verified.A total of 282 high school students and college students aged 15 to 21 participated in the online study. Three groups were distinguished among them: smokers, occasional smokers, and non-smokers.The study results did not reveal significant differences in impulsivity between the groups and indicated certain trends regarding differences in recognized values among regular smokers, occasional smokers, and non-smokers. The importance of the social environment of the smoking participant was also confirmed. The obtained results suggest some differences between the groups and possible personality determinants of adolescent smokers, but it does not allow for definitive conclusions regarding a direct relationship between them.
