The Occurence of the Red Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris L.) in Poland

Celem niniejszej pracy było zebranie danych o współczesnym występowaniu wiewiórki pospolitej (Sciurus vulgaris L.) w Polsce. Dane te zostaną wykorzystane do zobrazowania zasięgu gatunku w nowo powstającym „Atlasie ssaków Polski”. Zgromadzono 302 obserwacje, z czego 213 to obserwacje bezpośrednie, a 60 to dane zebrane dzięki fotografiom wiewiórki pospolitej zamieszczanym na galeriach i forach internetowych. Internet okazał się bogatym źródłem informacji o występowaniu tego gatunku. Porównanie mapy z zebranymi obecnie lokalizacjami z mapą występowania wiewiórki w „Atlasie występowania ssaków w Polsce” (1983) wskazuje, że udało się potwierdzić wiele zebranych tam lokalizacji, ale także pojawiły się obserwacje w miejscach, z których do tej pory nie było danych.

The aim of this work was to gather data regarding the current occurrence of the red squirrel (Scurus vulgaris L.) in Poland. This data will be used to picture the range of the species in the “Atlas ssaków Polski” that is being written. 302 observations were gathered, from which 213 were direct observations, and 60 were the data gathered thanks to the red squirrels photographs put in the internet galleries and forums. The internet turned out to be a rich source of information regarding the occurrence of this species. The comparison of the map containing the current locations with the one from the “Atlas występowania ssaków w Polsce” from 1983 shows that many locations presented there were confirmed, but also new observations were made in places, where there was no data until now.
