Depresja rozumiana w kategoriach zdrowotnego problemu dotyka niemal 20% społeczeństwa, a jej rozpowszechnienie znacznie wzrosło w ciągu ostatniego dziesięciolecia. Wzrost zachorowań na depresję można dostrzec także w populacji dzieci i młodzieży. Do takiego stanu rzeczy przyczyniać się może kumulacja licznych i intensywnych zmian biologicznych, psychologicznych i społecznych, jakie mają miejsce w okresie dorastania. Celem artykułu jest ukazanie specyfiki zaburzeń depresyjnych wieku rozwojowego. Nawiązując do modelu zdrowia człowieka w ujęciu bio-psycho-społecznym oraz pozostając wrażliwym na różne konteksty życia społecznego adolescenta, przedstawiono szereg czynników predysponujących, wyzwalających i podtrzymujących zaburzenia depresyjne. Opierając się na obowiązującej klasyfikacji chorób i zaburzeń psychicznych oraz zważając na dotychczasowe doniesienia naukowe i obserwacje własne, wskazano na przebieg depresji dzieci i młodzieży wraz z możliwymi do zaobserwowania symptomami. Wydaje się, iż mimo szerokiej dostępności do literatury przedmiotu problem depresji wieku rozwojowego wiąż jest bagatelizowany, nierzadko pozostaje wręcz tematem tabu. Rozpowszechnianie wiedzy o depresji dotykającej młodzież może przyczynić się do zwiększenia świadomości rodziców, opiekunów i osób pracujących z młodymi ludźmi, co może skutkować większą wrażliwością na to, co dzieje się w życiu młodego człowieka. Ponadto, znajomość genezy i ewentualnego przebiegu depresji może stanowić filar tworzonych w przyszłości programów psychoedukacyjnych, profilaktycznych i terapeutycznych.

Depression, understood in terms of a significant health problem, affects almost 20% of the population, and its prevalence has increased significantly over the last decade. The incidence of depression can also be seen in the population of children and adolescents. This may be due to the accumulation of numerous and intense biological, psychological and social changes that occur during adolescence. The aim of the article is to show the specificity of depressive disorders of the developmental age. Referring to the human health model in terms of bio-psycho-social and being sensitive to various contexts of the social life of the adolescent, a number of factors predisposing, triggering and supporting depressive disorders are presented. Based on the current classification of diseases and mental disorders, and in consideration of the current scientific reports and own observations, the course of depression of children and adolescents with visible symptoms was indicated. It seems that despite the wide availability of literature on the subject, the problem of depression in developmental age remains trivialized, often a taboo subject. Dissemination of knowledge about depression affecting young people may contribute to the awareness of parents, carers and people working with young people, which may result in greater sensitivity to what is happening in the life of a young person. In addition, knowledge of the genesis and possible course of depression may be a pillar of future psycho-educational, prophylactic and therapeutic programs.
