Memory of the place. Szczepański square as the view of spatial and functional transformation of Cracow foundation town

W niniejszej pracy zarysowano przebieg przemian przestrzeni obecnego placu Szczepańskiego, które nastąpiły od końca XIII do XXI wieku w celu poruszenia problemu pamięci miejsca. Wyodrębniono poszczególne fazy zmian. Pierwsza opisana faza obejmuje funkcję sakralną miejsca. Przestrzeń obecnego placu początkowo zajmował kościół p.w. św. Szczepana, kaplica p.w. śś. Macieja i Mateusza, cmentarz oraz zabudowania parafialne. Kolejną fazą przemian placu było przejęcie własności przez jezuitów i przekształcenie zabudowań na kolegium. Następnie pełniły one funkcję koszar miejskich. Po zburzeniu zabudowań powstał plac o obecnym kształcie. W XIX wieku i w pierwszej połowie XX wieku był placem targowym. W latach 60. plac przekształcono na parking. Ostatecznie plac przyjął obecną, reprezentacyjną funkcję. Omówiono kwestię potrzeby zachowania świadomości zaistniałych przemian jako dziedzictwa niematerialnego oraz fakt obecnego zatarcia pamięci miejsca.

This paper outlines the course of the transformations of the present space of Szczepanski square, which took place from the end of the 13th to the 21st century, in order to address the problem of the memory of the place. Different phases of change were identified. The first phase described includes the sacral function of the place. The area of the present square was originally occupied by the church of St. Stephen, chapel of St. Matthias and Matthew, cemetery and parish buildings. Another phase of the transformation of the square was the acquisition of property by the Jesuits and the conversion of the buildings to the college. Then they served as barracks. After the demolition of buildings, a square of the present shape was created. In the 19th century and in the first half of the 20th century it was a market square. In the 1960s the square was transformed into a parking lot. Finally, the square became the representative area. The issue of the need to keep conscious of the changes as intangible heritage and the fact of the present memory of the place is discussed.
