Joseph Stalin and his politics over the period 1922-1953 according to "The New York Times"

Praca opisuje Józefa Stalin i jego politykę w oparciu o artykuły publikowane w amerykańskiej gazecie „The New York Times”. Spośród kilkuset odnalezionych i przestudiowanych artykułów, dotyczących Józefa Stalina i Związku Radzieckiego z lat 1922-1953, z których ponad dwieście znalazło się na pierwszej stronie gazety, autorka wykorzystała w pracy około 200 reportaży napisanych przez kilkunastu redaktorów. Wybrane artykuły posłużyły zarówno do stworzenia narracji na temat Stalina i jego polityki, jak i analizy stosunku prasy amerykańskiej wobec ZSRR i jego przywódcy na przykładzie „The New York Timesa”. Autorka próbowała ocenić poziom wiedzy na temat tych zagadnień, ale również obiektywności w ich prezentowaniu, poszczególnych redaktorów oraz ich podatności na propagandę jako korespondentów stacjonujących w Moskwie. Podczas kwerendy, autorka skupiła się na artykułach dotyczących samego Stalina, ale zostały one podparte publikacjami traktującymi o warunkach politycznych, gospodarczych i kulturowych, które miały wpływ na jego politykę. Autorka w szczególności wykorzystała artykuły autorstwa Waltera Duranty'ego, Harolda Denny'ego, Cyrusa Sulzbergera, Edwina Jamesa, Jamesa Restona, Harrisona Salisbury'ego i Harry'ego Schwartza, ale również redaktorów, którzy rzadziej poruszali temat Stalina i Związku Radzieckiego.

This paper describes Joseph Stalin and his politics based on articles published in the American newspaper "The New York Times". From among several hundred articles found and studied about Joseph Stalin and the Soviet Union over the period 1922-1953, of which more than two hundred were on the front page of the newspaper, the author used in her work about 200 coverages written by several editors. Selected articles were used both to create a narrative about Stalin and his policy, and to analyze the attitude of the American press towards the USSR and its leader on the example of "The New York Times". The author tried to assess the level of knowledge about these issues, but also the objectivity in their presentation, individual editors and their susceptibility to propaganda as correspondents stationed in Moscow. During the query, the author focused on articles about Stalin himself, but they were supported by publications dealing with political, economic and cultural conditions that influenced his policy. The author particularly used articles by Walter Duranty, Harold Denny, Cyrus Sulzberger, Edwin James, James Reston, Harrison Salisbury and Harry Schwartz, but also editors who rarely touched on the subject of Stalin and the Soviet Union.
