Comparative analysis of the Brazilian and Polish dubbing of the film "Zootopia"

Celem niniejszej pracy licencjackiej jest przeprowadzenie analizy porównawczej brazylijskiego i polskiego dubbingu filmu animowanego „Zwierzogród”, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem strategii stosowanych w tłumaczeniu elementów językowych, kulturowych i humorystycznych. Część teoretyczna obejmuje kluczowe zagadnienia niezbędne do przeprowadzenia analizy, takie jak pojęcie i główne rodzaje tłumaczenia audiowizualnego a także wybrane teorie i strategie stosowane w przekładoznawstwie. Należą do nich teoria skoposu Hansa Vermeera, koncepcje domestykacji i egzotyzacji Lawrence’a Venutiego, klasyfikacja strategii stosowanych w tłumaczeniu gier słownych autorstwa Dirka Delabastity, strategie stosowane w tłumaczeniu odniesień kulturowych, Ogólna Teoria Humoru Werbalnego (GTVH) oraz koncepcja ekwiwalencji perlokucyjnej. Część praktyczna składa się z krótkiego streszczenia fabuły filmu oraz analizy przykładów z wersji oryginalnej oraz jej brazylijskiego i polskiego dubbingu. Analiza skupia się na tytule filmu, wybranych imionach bohaterów i regionów miasta Zwierzogród, grach słownych, odniesieniach kulturowych, żartach i scenach humorystycznych, a jej celem jest ustalenie w jaki sposób obie wersje dostosowują materiał źródłowy do oczekiwań językowych i kulturowych swoich odbiorców. Wyniki pokazują, że w dubbingu brazylijskim i polskim stosuje się różnorodne strategie tłumaczeniowe w zależności od rodzaju i funkcji analizowanego elementu. Badanie wykazuje, że dubbing nie jest dosłownym przeniesieniem słów z jednego języka do drugiego, ale złożonym procesem adaptacji językowej, kulturowej i funkcjonalnej.

The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to conduct a comparative analysis of the Brazilian and Polish dubbing of the animated film "Zootopia", with particular attention to the strategies used in the translation of linguistic, cultural, and humorous elements. The theoretical part discusses the key issues necessary for the analysis, such as the concept and main types of audiovisual translation, as well as selected theories and strategies applied in translation studies. These include Hans Vermeer’s Skopos theory, Lawrence Venuti’s concepts of domestication and foreignization, Dirk Delabastita’s classification of strategies used in the translation of puns, strategies applied in the translation of cultural references, the General Theory of Verbal Humor (GTVH), and the concept of perlocutionary equivalence. The practical part consists of a brief summary of the film’s plot and an analysis of examples from the original version and its Brazilian and Polish dubbed versions. The analysis focuses on the film title, selected character names and city districts in Zootopia, puns and wordplay, cultural references, jokes, and humorous scenes. Its purpose is to determine how both versions adapt the source material to the linguistic and cultural expectations of their audiences. The results show that Brazilian and Polish dubbing employ a variety of translation strategies depending on the type and function of the analyzed element. The study demonstrates that dubbing is not a literal transfer of words from one language into another, but rather a complex process of linguistic, cultural, and functional adaptation.

O objetivo desta tese de licenciatura é realizar uma análise comparativa da dublagem brasileira e polonesa no filme de animação "Zootopia: Essa Cidade é o Bicho", com especial atenção às estratégias utilizadas na tradução de elementos linguísticos, culturais e humorísticos. A parte teórica aborda questões fundamentais para a realização da análise, tais como o conceito e os principais tipos de tradução audiovisual, bem como teorias e estratégias selecionadas no âmbito dos estudos da tradução. Entre elas, destacam-se a teoria do Skopos de Hans Vermeer, os conceitos de domesticação e estrangeirização de Lawrence Venuti, a classificação das estratégias utilizadas na tradução de trocadilhos proposta por Dirk Delabastita, as estratégias aplicadas à tradução de referências culturais, a Teoria Geral do Humor Verbal (GTVH) e o conceito de equivalência perlocutória. A parte prática consiste em um breve resumo do enredo do filme e na análise de exemplos retirados da versão original e de suas dublagens brasileira e polonesa. A análise concentra-se no título do filme, em nomes selecionados de personagens e regiões da cidade de Zootopia, em trocadilhos e jogos de palavras, referências culturais, piadas e cenas humorísticas. Seu objetivo é determinar de que modo ambas as versões adaptam o material de partida às expectativas linguísticas e culturais de seus públicos-alvo. Os resultados mostram que as dublagens brasileira e polonesa empregam diversas estratégias tradutórias, dependendo do tipo e da função do elemento analisado. O estudo demonstra que a dublagem não consiste em uma transferência literal de palavras de uma língua para outra, mas em um processo complexo de adaptação linguística, cultural e funcional.
