The dissertation discusses the motif of light and darkness in Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness and Lord Jim. The first and the third chapter present the instances where Joseph Conrad calls into doubt the common association of light with knowledge and truth and darkness with ignorance and falsehood. The second and the fourth chapter focus on the passages from the novel where Joseph Conrad draws on the common symbolism of light and darkness. The fifth chapter compares how the motif of light and darkness is used in the two novels.Subverting the common symbolism of light and darkness reflects Conrad's scepticism about our ability to understand the world, which is a characteristic feature of the Modernist movement. The only kind of understanding that men can hope to acquire is self-knowledge. However, the truth is always painful, and we learn it too late to change anything in our lives.
