Doppelgänger w opowiadaniu „William Wilson” Edgara Allana Poe i noweli Niezwykły przypadek doktora Jekylla i pana Hyde’a Roberta Louisa Stevensona

Przedstawiona praca licencjacka zawiera analizę motywu sobowtóra w prozie anglojęzycznej XIX wieku na przykładzie „Williama Wilsona” (1839) Edgara Allana Poe i Dziwnego przypadku Doktora Jekylla i Pana Hyde’a Roberta Louisa Stevensona. We wstępie przedstawiam antropologiczne i psychologiczne definicje koncepcji sobowtóra. Rozdział pierwszy jest poświęcony analizie opowiadania Poe i przedstawia interpretację postaci sobowtóra jako alegorii sumienia głównego bohatera. Rozdział drugi przedstawia nowelę Stevensona jako bardziej złożony tekst, gdzie sobowtór stanowi odbicie niepokoju i strachów wiktoriańskiego społeczeństwa. W podsumowaniu zaznaczam, że chociaż motyw sobowtóra powszechnie występuje w dziełach poświęconych tematowi złożoności natury ludzkiej, to przeszedł znaczną ewolucję w trakcie XIX wieku.

The present thesis is an analysis of the development of the motif of the doppelgänger in 19th-century fiction on the example of E.A. Poe’s “William Wilson” (1839) and R.L. Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886). In the Introduction I present the anthropological and psychological definitions of the doppelgänger. Chapter One is devoted to the analysis of Poe’s short story and presents the interpretation of the double as the moral conscience of the protagonist. Chapter Two presents Stevenson’s novella as a more complex work, with the doppelgänger reflecting the fears and anxieties of late Victorian society. In Conclusions I point out that although the motif has been used in the works concerned with the complexity of human nature, it has undergone a considerable evolution in the course of the 19th century.
