Christian elements in the "History" of Theophylact Simocatta

Niniejsza praca jest analizą występowania motywów chrześcijańskich w dziele Teofilakta Simokatty pn „Historia Powszechna” (Οἰκουμενικὴ ἱστορία). Jest on ostatnim przedstawicielem tzw. historiografii klasycyzującej, która wzorowana była na dziełach starożytnych poprzedników, takich jak Herodot czy Tukidydes. Niechęć autorów klasycyzujących do wprowadzania jakichkolwiek zmian w sposobie prezentacji świata sprawiało, że w warunkach schrystianizowanego Cesarstwa motywy czy terminy chrześcijańskie niemal w ogóle nie występowały w tekście. Teofilakt Simokatta jest historykiem, u którego zmiany w tej materii są znaczące i przeanalizowanie tego zjawiska jest tematem niniejszej pracy. Praca jest podzielona na cztery rozdziały. Pierwszy przedstawia tło historyczne dla „Historii Powszechnej”, drugi prezentuje „filozofię historii” u Teofilakta, trzeci jest właściwą analizą motywów chrześcijańskich w dziele Teofilakta, w czwartym zaś dokonano porównania z dziełem Prokopiusza z Cezarei w celu ustalenia stopnia ewolucji gatunku w tym zakresie.

This work presents an analysis of the occurrence of the Christian motifs in the "History" of Theophylact Simocatta. He is the last representative of the so-called classicising historiography, which was based on the works of ancient authors such as Herodotus and Thucydides. The reluctance of the classicising authors to add any changes to the way of presenting the world led to a situation when in the strongly Christianised empire Christian motifs or terms were almost absolutely absent in the text. Theophylact Simocatta is historian, in whose work the changes in this matter are significant. Analysis of this phenomenon is the theme of my work. The work is divided into four chapters. The first one is the historical background fo the "History", the second one shows the Theophylact's "philosophy of history", the third one is the actual analysis of the Christian motifs in Theophylact's work. Finally in the fourth comparison is made with the work o Procopius of Caesarea, to show the level of evolution of the genre in this regard.
