The genetic basis of male infertility in human.

Niepłodność męska jest szeroko badanym problemem, któremu poświęcono wiele badań na przestrzeni ostatnich kilkunastu lat. Badania genetycznych przyczyn tego zjawiska, wyjaśniają coraz więcej przypadków o etiologii dotąd uważanej za nieznaną lub niejasną. Niniejsza praca przedstawia wybrane, genetyczne przyczyny powodujące niepłodność męską, między innymi aberracje chromosomowe, anomalie związane z gonadotropinami, mikrodelecje w obrębie chromosomu Y oraz mutacje mitochondrialnego DNA. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na dwa ostatnie aspekty problemu, mianowicie na chromosom Y i mtDNA. Wyjaśnione zostały również podstawowe pojęcia związane z niepłodnością męską, a końcowa część pracy porusza dodatkowo problem leczenia niepłodności męskiej.

Male infertility is a widely studied problem that received a lot of research over the last several years. Understanding the genetic causes of this phenomenon explains more and more cases whose etiology has been considered to be unknown or unclear. This paper presents selected, genetic causes leading to male infertility, including the chromosome aberrations, anomalies associated with gonadotropins, microdeletions of the Y chromosome and mitochondrial DNA. Particular attention was paid to the last two aspects of the problem, namely the Y chromosome and mtDNA. The paper explains the basic concepts related to male infertility, and the final part of the work raises also the issue of treatment of male infertility.
