Przedstawienie postaci kobiecych i pojęcia kobiecości w twórczości Angeli Carter

Niniejsza praca magisterska ma na celu przedstawienie kobiecości i sposobu w jaki przedstawiane są kobiety w wybranych opowiadaniach ze zbioru „The Bloody Chamber” –„The Bloody Chamber”, „The Courtship of Mr Lyon”, „The Tiger’s Bride” oraz „Wolf-Alice”, oraz w powieści „The Magic Toyshop”. Używając badań nad płcią kulturową i feminizmem, oraz posługując się specjalistycznymi terminami, praca analizuje jak postrzegane są kobiety na tle mężczyzn i jaka jest ich rola w społeczeństwie. Pierwszy rozdział poświęcony jest części teoretycznej i opisuje najważniejsze zagadnienia z badań nad feminizmem. Dodatkowo obejmuje również krótką biografię autorki. Rozdział drugi skupia się na analizie kobiecych postaci w wybranych opowiadaniach z cyklu „The Bloody Chamber”, podczas gdy trzeci rozdział opisuje kobiety w powieści „The Magic Toyshop” z naciskiem na ich relacje z głównym męskim bohaterem. Praca kończy się wnioskiem, że w swojej twórczości Angela Carter podkreśla rolę feminizmu, jednocześnie przedstawiając kobiece postacie w sposób niejednoznaczny, nie skupiając się na jednym właściwym obrazie kobiety. Ponadto Carter zaznacza negatywny wpływ, jaki mężczyźni mogą mieć na kobiety.

The purpose of this MA thesis is to examine the theme of femininity and perception of women in Angela Carter’s selected short stories from the collection The Bloody Chamber – “The Bloody Chamber”, “The Courtship of Mr Lyon”, “The Tiger’s Bride” and “Wolf-Alice”, as well as in the novel The Magic Toyshop. The thesis aims at showing how women are depicted in Carter’s fiction, how they discover their femininity and in what way they are influenced by their relationships with men. The thesis uses such methodologies as gender studies and feminist studies, introducing and explaining various terms that are helpful in understanding Carter’s fiction. The first chapter is theoretical and discusses the most important aspects of the feminist studies and the development of the feminist movement, as well as the gender roles. Additionally, the first chapter encompasses a brief biography of Angela Carter. The second chapter is devoted to the depiction of women in selected short stories from The Bloody Chamber, whereas the third chapter examines the female characters in The Magic Toyshop, with special emphasis on their relationships with the main male figure of Uncle Philip. Apart from that, the third chapter focuses strongly on discussing toxic masculinity. The thesis ends with a conclusion that feminism plays an important role in Angela Carter’s fiction, but the author depicts women from various points of view. Moreover, Carter puts emphasis on the destructive influence of men who tend to take advantage of their position.
