Praca analizuje jak w serialu Jossa Whedona zatytułowanym Buffy: Postrach wampirów wampiry służą do zgłębiania tematów moralności i niejednoznaczności dobra i zła. W serialu motywy tradycyjnie kojarzone z wampirami są zarówno podtrzymywane, jak i podważane, co czyni go fascynującym studium wewnętrznych ludzkich zmagań. Do analizy wampirów i ich roli w Buffy: Postrach wampirów wykorzystano materiały z literatury naukowej oraz teksty znajdujące się w internetowych, naukowych czasopismach. Szczególnie przydatne okazało się czasopismo Slayage: The Journal of Whedon Studies. Zawiera ono artykuły uczonych (między innymi Stacey Abbott) którzy badają wampiry i sam serial Buffy, oraz analizują go z różnych punktów widzenia. Mimo, że Buffy zakończyło się w 2003 roku, wciąż publikowane są nowe wydania Slayage, co pokazuje jak wciąż znaczące są serial i poruszane w nim tematy. Praca dowodzi, że problemy wampirów takich jak Spike czy Angel odzwierciedlają zmagania Buffy, takie jak poczucie wyobcowania, lęk przed utratą kontroli czy trudność w zaakceptowaniu swojej tożsamości, ale tak samo jak wspomniane wampiry potrafią je przezwyciężyć, tak samo udaje się to głównej bohaterce. Dodatkowo, wampiry komplikują to jak ludzkie postacie postrzegają dobro i zło, szczególnie poprzez wątek Spike’a, który pokazuje, że najgorszy złoczyńca może całkowicie zmienić swoje postępowanie. Z drugiej strony, przemiana Willow w złą czarownicę, zapowiedziana wcześniej przez wampirzą Willow z innej rzeczywistości, pokazuje, że zmiana z dobra na zło również jest możliwa i że w każdym istnieje zarówno jasna, jak i mroczna strona, niezależnie od gatunku. Fakt, że serial Buffy: Postrach Wampirów jest wciąż analizowany przez uczonych wskazuje, że serial oraz postać wampira stanowią podatny grunt do badania uniwersalnych tematów z nadnaturalnej perspektywy.

This dissertation analyses how in the television series by Joss Whedon titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer vampire characters serve to explore the themes of morality and the ambiguity of good and evil. In the series, traditional vampire tropes are both maintained and subverted, making the series a compelling investigation into internal human struggles. To analysise vampires and the purpose they serve in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, data from academic literature and the texts found in online academic journals were used. Slayage: The Journal of Whedon Studies was particularly useful. It contains the contributions of academic scholars studying vampires and Buffy itself (Stacey Abbott among others) and analysing the series from multiple points of view. Even though Buffy ended in 2003 Slayage continues to publish, demonstrating the ongoing relevance of the series and themes included in it. The paper argues that the problems of vampires such as Angel and Spike mirror Buffy’s struggles, such as feelings of alienation, fear of losing control, or struggling to accept one’s identity, but as vampires manage to overcome them, so does the eponymous heroine. Additionally, vampires confuse the perceptions of good and evil held by the human characters, especially with Spike’s redemption arc showing that the most wicked villain can completely change their ways. On the other hand, Willow’s transformation into an evil witch, foreshadowed before by her vampire self from another reality, shows that the change from good to evil is possible too, and that there is light and darkness in everyone, regardless of the species. The continuing relevance of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in academic discourse suggests that the series and the figure of a vampire provide a fertile ground to examine universal themes from a supernatural perspective.
