Shades of melancholy and depression experiences in selected feature films

Praca dotyczy melancholii i pokrewnych jej zjawisk obecnych w kinie. Odwołując się do poszczególnych definicji staram się odnaleźć symptomy melancholii, acedii, rozpaczy i nostalgii zarówno w sylwetkach bohaterów, jak i warstwach audiowizualnych czterech filmów. Rozdział pierwszy stanowi opis kształtowania się pojęcia melancholii i próbę jego usystematyzowania. W rozdziale drugim na przykładzie filmu “Czerwona Pustynia” w reż. Michelangelo Antonioniego staram się opisać problem depresji jako choroby cywilizacyjnej. W rozdziale trzecim omawiam “Melancholię” Larsa von Triera w kontekście zjawiska depresji i rozpaczy. Rozdział czwarty dotyczy melancholii religijnej, którą przedstawiam na przykładzie “Gości wieczerzy pańskiej” Ingmara Bergmana. Ostatni rozdział poświęcony jest nostalgii, którą dostrzegam u bohatera filmu “Tylko kochankowie przeżyją” Jima Jarmuscha.

The master's thesis concerns melancholy and related phenomena present in the cinema. Referring to particular definitions, I try to find symptoms of melancholy, acedia, despair and nostalgia both in the characters' profiles and in the audiovisual layer of four films. The first chapter describes the development of the concept of melancholy and attempts to systematize it. In the second chapter, on the example of the film "Red Desert" dir. Michelangelo Antonioni, I try to describe the problem of depression as a disease of civilization. In chapter three I discuss "Melancholy" dir. Lars von Trier in the context of the phenomenon of depression and despair. The fourth chapter deals with religious melancholy, which I present on the example of "Winter Light" dir. Ingmar Bergman. The last chapter is devoted to the nostalgia that I see in the protagonist of the film "Only Lovers Left Alive" dir. Jim Jarmusch.
