Geneza Bitwy o Maldon - interakcja poezji i historii.

Niniejsza praca poświęcona jest genezie „Bitwy o Maldon”, jednego ze staroangielskich poematów heroicznych, który upamiętnia zdarzenia z 991 roku. Szczegółowa analiza poematu skupia się przede wszystkim na interakcji poezji i historii, stąd też studium hipotez dotyczących genezy poematu prowadzi do dyskusji na temat różnego rodzaju problemów społecznych, politycznych i historycznych. Autorka pracy porusza tematy takie jak: mitologizacja przeszłości w poezji; zjawisko formacji linii rodowej opartej na micie utworzonym wokół bitwy; znaczenie poematu dla środowiska króla Ethelreda oraz dla społeczności monastycznych takich jak Ely; waga praw własności ziemskich oraz aktów prawnych na początku XI wieku; problemy narodowościowe w Anglii okresu wznowionych podbojów skandynawskich znajdujące odbicie w poemacie oraz atmosfera fatalizmu towarzysząca millenium.

The following thesis is concerned with the origin of one of the Old English heroic poems, The Battle of Maldon, which commemorates the actual battle in 991. This specific case study is centred upon the interaction of poetry and history. Thus, the detailed analysis of the hypotheses concerning the poem’s origin leads to the discussion of different social, political and historical issues. The thesis deals with the problems such as: the mythologization of the past in poetry; the significance of the poem for the reign of king Æthelred and for the monastic communities such as Ely; the formation of lineage identity based on the Maldon myth; the importance of land ownership rights and the legislation at the turn of the 11th century; the notions of national identity connected with the renewed Viking raids reflected in the poem; and Anglo-Saxon fatalism which evolved around the millennium.
