Sylwetki kobiet w dziełach E. A. Poego

Edgar Allan Poe – znany amerykański poeta, nowelista oraz krytyk literacki. Jego życie od wczesnych lat młodości zostało naznaczone śmiercią. Tematem większości jego dzieł literackich jest motyw śmierci młodych, pięknych kobiet, których życie zostało nagle zakończone. Poe miał obsesje na punkcie tego tematu, gdyż uważał śmierć młodej kobiety za motyw, o którym najlepiej tworzyć dzieła literackie. Analizując jego wiersze jak i nowele chciałabym się dowiedzieć, jak opisane w nich sylwetki kobiet łączą się z jego definicją piękna w sztuce. Interesuje mnie również to, w jaki sposób postaci kobiece wpływają na postępowanie mężczyzn w jego utworach. W większości dzieł Poego kobiety mają negatywny wpływ na swoich mężów. Często są one przyczyną pchającą mężczyzn ku przemocy, okrucieństwu aż w końcu doprowadzają ich do obłędu. Poprzez swoją pracę chciałabym zrozumieć znaczenie tego szaleństwa dla postaci Poego jak również dla samego Poego jako autora. Czy utrata zdrowego rozsądku to choroba niszcząca artystyczny geniusz? A może przeciwnie, coś pozytywnego, co pozwala artyście wzbogacić jego twórczość? W swojej poezji, w wierszach „Dla Ani” czy „ Annabel Lee” Poe przedstawia kobiety jako strażniczki, które chronią mężczyzn przed okrucieństwami życia codziennego. Opisuje je jako pierwowzory matki, które dzięki sile swojej miłości prowadzą mężczyzn ku bezpieczeństwu. Te pozytywne cechy nie przewijają się jednak w jego nowelach. Nowele Poego, jak Ligeja, Berenice czy Morella, charakteryzuje mroczna atmosfera i częste akty przemocy. W nowelach miłość do kobiety nie jest czymś pozytywnym lecz niezdrową, wyniszczającą obsesją. Kobiety ze strażniczek czuwających nad bezpieczeństwem mężczyzn zmieniły się w niebezpieczne istoty popychające ukochanych do obłędu. W nowelach posiadają one tajemniczą wiedzę, którą mężczyźni pragną zdobyć za wszelką cenę. W cieniu wszechobecnej śmierci rozum walczy z uczuciami; mężczyźni zabiją ukochane kobiety, które z kolei doprowadzają ich do obłędu. Z chaosu tej walki Poe próbuje wykreować definicję bycia prawdziwym artystą. Poprzez analizę różnych sylwetek kobiet w poezji oraz nowelach Poego chcę zrozumieć, jakie znaczenie miało dla niego piękno oraz czy szaleństwo spowodowane przez kobiety miało wpływ na jego definicję idealnego artysty.

Edgar Allan Poe was a famous American short story writer, poet and literary critic. From his early childhood Poe’s life was overshadowed by the presence of death. Most of his stories and poems are about different young beautiful women whose lives ended with unexpected and sudden deaths. Poe was obsessed with the death of a young women because in his opinion it was the most beautiful and artistic subject for a literary work. Through the analysis of his poems as well as his short stories I would like to investigate how his perception of women affects their presentation in his literary works and how the way in which they are presented stems from his interpretation of the concept of beauty in art. I also would like to focus on analyzing how female figures in Poe’s stories affect male narrators. In the majority of his tales women, have negative influence on the narrators. Beautiful wives, especially in Poe’s short stories, are the main factor which leads men to violence, cruelty and in the end to madness. I am interested in investigating what madness means for Poe’s narrators as well as for Poe as an author. Is becoming mad something negative or not? Is madness an illness which eliminates artistic creativity or, on the contrary, makes it stronger (allows an artist to evolve)? In Poe’s poems: “For Annie” and “Annabel Lee” the female characters are depicted as guardians who protect the male protagonists from dangers of reality and guide them to safety. They are presented as mother-like figures and the power of their love is highly praised. However, his short stories such as: Ligeia, Berenice or Morella ,which I will also analyze in my thesis, do not present women as positive figures. These stories have darker atmosphere and are filled with violence. In them, the act of loving somebody is interpreted as an unhealthy obsession. Women are not guardians, they are force of destruction which leads the male narrators to madness. They possess mysterious/forbidden knowledge which men want to obtain at any cost. In the shadow of forever present death, reason fights with emotions, men kill women, women drive men to madness and from this chaotic war Poe tries to figure out the real meaning of being an artist. By analyzing these different women characters I would like to discover to how much personal loses influenced Poe as a writer, what beauty meant for him and what the role of madness was in the process of shaping the figure of a true artist. I also would like to investigate the relationships between the male narrators and female characters in order to see to what extend these narrators symbolize Poe’s views concerning art as well as the concept of an ideal artist.
