The impact of the informality in the quality of undergraduate education in Peru

master
This thesis aims to present how informality impacts the quality of undergraduate education in Peru, based on fundamental, exploratory and qualitative research. Peru is a country in which informality, in terms of sector and employment, has been a national issue during the last decades. This represents a main concern for national economy. Being informal means to work or operate outside the law and regulations. It is also linked with low income, low productivity and low education. Now the point is how difficult it is for those informal entities to become formal. Therefore, the role of the government could be crucial to set clear procedures and strategies if it wants to boost formality. On the other hand, another important point of this thesis is about the quality of undergraduate education. A good quality education fights against poverty and positively impacts economic growth. And it seems it is not the case in Peru. But a very important starting point would be to point out the enaction of the University Law 30220, which has been a very important effort of the government to implement quality standards in undergraduate studies. Informality and undergraduate education are closely linked. Reducing informality could mean improving life quality for more Peruvians through the attainment of better labor conditions and improvement of expected income. Consequently, the thesis concludes that informality reduces opportunities for potential undergraduate students. Another important aspect is the creation of a market of bad-quality private universities because of the environment of informality. Besides, the importance of government investment in aspects related to undergraduate quality education is not being carried out in reality because of informality, which also boosts underemployment and subsequent low income for households, so that it generates a vicious circle as parents cannot offer best options for their children and they finally continue work in informal employments.pl
