Armenian Americans – from hidden minority to celebrity ethnicity.

Celem niniejszej dysertacji jest opisanie diaspory Armenoamerykanów jako wielowymiarowego zjawiska. Autorka ukaże historię imigracji ormiańskiej do USA, oraz wpływ celebrytów na promowanie wiedzy o ludobójstwie Ormian i działań na rzecz jego rozpoznania.Pierwszy rozdział pracy obejmuje analizy metodologiczne, przedstawia najważniejsze pojęcia pojawiające się w dysertacji oraz przybliża problemy związane z zebraniem koniecznych danych.Drugi rozdział to zrekonstruowanie historii procesu imigracji Ormian oraz zidentyfikowanie jego najważniejszych charakterystyk. Ukazuje tworzenie się amerykańskiej diaspory, sprawy sądowe związane z ograniczeniami rasowymi i stereotypy, z którymi Ormianie spotykali się na co dzień. Następny podrozdział opisuje falę uchodźców i działalność Near East Relief. Ostatnie akapity poświęcone są imigracji, aż do uzyskania niepodległości przez Republikę Armenii, a także życiu religijnemu, politycznemu i kulturalnemu Armenoamerykanów.Trzeci rozdział opisuje współczesną populację Armenian Americans z perspektywy demografii, oraz największe obecnie skupisko diaspory w Kalifornii. Wskazuje na znaczącą wagę mniejszości ormiańskiej dla wzajemnych relacji USA i Armenii.Rozdział ostatni został poświęcony ukazaniu rosnącej roli celebrytów w promowaniu postulatów ważnych dla grupy Armenoamerykanów. Położono nacisk na zaprezentowanie przykładów działań w przestrzeni mass mediów i social mediów, które miały na celu wpłynięcie na amerykańską opinię publiczną.

A purpose of this dissertation is to thoroughly describe a multidimensional problem - Armenian Americans presented in broad perspective. The author intends to provide background information for understanding the Armenian immigration to the US over the last few centuries, and to picture influence of celebrities on the image management and promoting articular case – Armenian genocide recognition.The first part of this study is dedicated to analyzing data related difficulties, mixed methodology, and the most important definitions.The second chapter contains historical view on Armenian Americans migration processes, identification of its main parameters and the most important characteristics. It describes beginnings of the diaspora formation, racial prerequisite cases and stereotypes. The next topic is the Armenian refugees wave and Near East Relief humanitarian project. The last paragraphs include the post-war period until the establishment of the Republic of Armenia in 1991, Armenian Americans religious life, numerous political organizations, and cultural institutions.The next chapter is dedicated to analyzing today’s diaspora demographics, Armenians living in the state of California and the significant political weight of diaspora, both to the US and the Republic of Armenia.At the end of this study author emphasizes on the increasing importance of celebrities as the ambassadors directing more attention towards Armenian issues. And to picture the complex phenomenon of the role of mass media and social media in shaping public opinion, examples of communication campaigns will be provided.
