Pre-implantation diagnosis of human in vitro embryos and protection of human dignity

Problemy poddane analizie w artykule są związane z wolnością prokreacyjną jednostki, która aktualnie obejmuje m.in swobodę w zakresie dostępu do procedur zapłodnienia pozaustrojowego. Jednym z elementów tych procedur może być diagnostyka preimplantacyjna zarodków ludzkich in vitro dokonywana w celu wykrycia chorób jednogenowych lub aberracji chromosomowych. Związana immanentnie z diagnostyką preimplantacyjną negatywna selekcja zarodków in vitro dotkniętych wskazanymi chorobami lub aberracjami budzi kontrowersje natury etycznej i prawnej. Przeciwnicy diagnostyki preimplantacyjnej podnoszą, że jej stosowanie jest nie do pogodzenia z ochroną godnością człowieka (która służy człowiekowi zarówno w postnatalnej, jak i prenatalnej fazie życia). Problem ten jest w artykule poddany analizie odrębnie w odniesieniu do różnych typów sytuacji i celów, w których przeprowadzana jest diagnostyka preimplantacyjna.

The problems analysed in the paper are related to the procreative freedom of the individual, which currently includes, among others, freedom of access to in vitro fertilization procedures. One of the elements of these procedures may be pre-implantation diagnosis of human in vitro embryos, performed to detect monogenic diseases or chromosome aberrations. Immanently related to pre-implantation diagnosis, the negative selection of in vitro embryos affected by such diseases or aberrations is controversial in ethical and legal terms. Opponents of pre-implantation diagnosis claim that its use is incompatible with the protection of human dignity (which serves man both in the postnatal and prenatal phases of life). This problem is analyzed separately in the paper with reference to different types of situations and purposes in which preimplantation diagnosis is carried out.
