Deformacje Bermana w dwóch polskich przekładach dzieła J.R.R. Tolkiena pod tytułem „The Hobbit or There and Back Again”

Celem tej pracy jest zestawienie oraz porównanie oryginalnego tekstu „The Hobbit, or There and Back Again” autorstwa J.R.R. Tolkiena z dwoma polskimi przekładami: Marii Skibniewskiej z roku 1960 oraz Pauliny Braiter z 1997. Porównanie oparte jest na wybranych deformacjach opisanych w pracy Antoine Bermana pod tytułem „Translation and the Trials of the Foreign”. Do wybranych deformacji należą: rationalisation, clarification, expansion, ennoblement, the destruction of expressions and idioms, the destruction of underlying networks of signification, qualitative impoverishment oraz quantitative impoverishment. Warto zwrócić uwagę, że celem analizy nie jest porównywanie obu przekładów pod względem jakości oraz ocenianie tłumaczy, którzy podjęli się niezwykle trudnego zadania jakim było zakorzenienie istotnego dzieła Tolkiena w polskiej kulturze. Poddając analizie przekłady Marii Skibniewskiej oraz Pauliny Braiter zauważyć można, iż są one (według Bermana) zdeformowane. Tłumaczenie Skibniewskiej zawiera nieco więcej deformacji niż tłumaczenie Braiter. Analiza wykazuje również, że do najczęstszych deformacji występujących w obu polskich przekładach należą: rationalisation, expansion oraz clarification, które (również z pozostałymi deformacjami) są bardzo trudne do wychwycenia oraz uniknięcia. Zjawisko to wynika z faktu, że deformacje są nieodłącznym produktem ubocznym każdego przekładu, a każda interwencja tłumacza mająca na celu ich eliminacje będzie skutkowała zwiększeniem ich liczby.

The purpose of this research is to juxtapose and compare the source text ''The Hobbit, or There and Back Again'' by J.R.R. Tolkien with its two Polish equivalents: the translation made by Maria Skibniewska from 1960 and the subsequent one by Paulina Braiter from 1997. The comparison is based on the existence of selected deforming tendencies described in work ''Translation and the Trials of the Foreign'' by Antoine Berman. Those chosen tendencies are as follows: rationalisation, clarification, expansion, ennoblement, the destruction of expressions and idioms, the destruction of underlying networks of signification, qualitative impoverishment and quantitative impoverishment. It is important to note that the research does not compare and state which translation is better, nor judge the translators responsible for bringing the significant work of Tolkien into Polish culture. The Analysis concludes that both Skibniewska's and Braiter's translations are, according to Antoine Berman, deformed, with Skibniewska's translation being slightly more rich in deforming tendencies. The research also shows that the most common deforming tendencies present in both Polish translations are rationalisation, expansion and clarification, which, alongside with other deforming tendencies, not only are hard to be noticed and avoided, but also cannot be fully eradicated from the equivalent bearing on the fact that they act as an inherent by-products of each act of translation and every intervention of the translator oriented towards elimination of deforming tendencies will result in increased number of them.
