Shamanism in the Casas Grandes culture on the example of selected iconography from the Medio period.

Kultura Casas Grandes słynie z niesamowicie złożonej tradycji, którą od lat badacze starają się scharakteryzować. Mimo iż Paquime opisywane jest jako najważniejsze rytualne centrum w okresie środkowym, kwestia formy instytucji religijnej, jaka wówczas była sprawowana jest nierozstrzygnięta po dziś dzień. Jedną z teorii, jest wytworzenie się specyficznej funkcji magiczno-religijnej określanej jako szaman-kapłan. Celem niniejszej pracy jest rozważenie możliwej obecności szamanizmu w kulturze Casas Grandes w okresie środkowym, na podstawie analizy serii przedstawień ikonograficznych, które w zestawieniu ze sobą interpretowane są jako lot szamański. Przebadano kilka artefaktów pokazujących poszczególne fazy transu szamana. Przedstawienia te, rozważać można jako sekwencję wydarzeń, śledząc a następnie zestawiając ze sobą powtarzające się na konkretnych postaciach symbole, takie jak kratka i kółka z kropką. Zbiór użyty do analizy obejmuje przedstawienia palaczy, a także naczynia ceramiczne z ikonografią obrazującą rytualny taniec, transformację, lot oraz świat duchów.

The Casas Grandes culture is famous for its incredibly complex tradition, which researchers have been trying to characterize for years. Although Paquime is described as the most important ritual center in the Medio Period, the form of the religious institution that was implemented at the time is still unresolved. One theory is the formation of a specific magical-religious function described as shaman-priest. The purpose of this study is to consider the possible presence of shamanism in the Casas Grandes culture during the Medio Period, based on an analysis of a series of iconographic representations that, when placed together, are interpreted as shamanic magic flight. As a research subject, several different artifacts have been developed showing the different phases of a shaman's trance. The depictions can be sequenced by tracing the symbols, such as the grid and dotted circles, that recur on the figures involved. The set used includes smoking figurines, as well as ceramic vessels with iconography depicting ritual dance, transformation, flight and the spirit world.
