Życie, śmierć i autor: od Joyce'a przez B.S. Johnsona do liberatury

Pracę magisterką przygotowano z okazji dwudziestej rocznicy opublikowania eseju-manifestu Zenona Fajfera pt. „Liberatura. Aneks do słownika terminów literackich,” proponującym koncept liberatury – gatunku literackiego odnoszącego się do książek, których autorzy jednoczą treść z formą, uznając oba aspekty dzieła za istotne i pełne potencjału nośniki znaczeń. Celem pracy jest analiza motywu życia i śmierci, który stanowi wymiar tematyczny liberatury jako gatunku, w odniesieniu do Ulissesa Jamesa Joyce’a, Alberta Angelo i Nieszczęsnych B. S. Johnsona oraz Oka-leczenia Zenona Fajfera i Katarzyny Bazarnik. Użyto perspektywy historyczno-literackiej, by prześledzić, jak rozwój tego motywu od początku XX wieku do czasów obecnych prezentuje się w wybranych dziełach. Percepcja śmierci u bohaterów oraz jej wpływ na ich życie zbadane zostały przy zwróceniu uwagi na relacje i związki pomiędzy postaciami. Ponadto motyw omówiono w odniesieniu do sposobów wykorzystania książki jako materialnego obiektu oraz rozwiązań mających na celu przedstawienie śmierci w przestrzeni woluminu. Badanie uzupełnia analiza pozycji autorów w stosunku do ich dzieł. Wskazano wybrane elementy autobiograficzne w Ulissesie, a autorefleksyjne strategie B.S. Johnsona i Zenkasi zestawiono z konceptami metafikcji i śmierci autora. Rozwiązania tych ostatnich odniesiono także do tez metamodernizmu. We wnioskach zaprezentowano połączenie treści i formy jako jedną z wielu fuzji charakterystycznych dla omawianych dzieł, a także, przypuszczalnie, całego gatunku.

The thesis has been prepared on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the publication of Zenon Fajfer’s essay-manifesto “Liberature. Appendix to a Dictionary of Literary Terms”, which introduces the concept of liberature – a literary genre encompassing books whose authors fuse the content with the form, treating both as important and useful means of expression. The goal of this paper is to analyse the theme of life and death, which constitutes a thematic dimension of liberature, with reference to James Joyce’s Ulysses, B.S. Johnson’s Albert Angelo and The Unfortunates as well as Zenon Fajfer and Katarzyna Bazarnik’s Oka-leczenie. The aim is to look at the genre from the historical perspective and see how the development of the theme from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day is represented in the selected works. The protagonists’ perception of death and its influence on their lives is analysed with the focus on relationships and connections between the characters. Besides, the theme is examined with regard to the authors’ exploration of the book as a material entity and their ways of enacting death in the space of the book. This is complimented with the analysis of the position of the authors in relation to their works. Chosen autobiographical elements in Ulysses are pointed out, while B.S. Johnson’s and Zenkasi’s self-reflexive strategies are set against the concepts of metafiction and the death of the author. The latter’s solutions are also related to metamodern concerns. As a result, the content-form fusion is viewed as one of many fusions which characterize the works in question and presumably, the whole genre.
