To Stop the Sun From Rising: An Examination of the Geopolitical Consequences of an Unauthorized Nuclear Detonation

master
Nuclear weapons are without a doubt one of the most incredible and terrible inventions that mankind has ever created. As the world trends towards greater proliferation of nuclear materials, if not nuclear weapons, the international community must address an appropriately horrifying question. How would states interact with each other in the aftermath of an unauthorized nuclear detonation, carried out by a terror group? In order to do so correctly, several aspects will be examined in turn. First, we will define the necessary terms relevant to nuclear weapons and this thesis in general, before covering the international and bilateral treaties that govern nuclear material and weapons. Then, we will examine the technical basis of nuclear weapons, the different types of weapons, methods of deployment, and the history of nuclear proliferation. Chapter three will examine the current state of nuclear terrorism, counterterrorism, specific nuclear terminology that pertains to nuclear counterterrorism, and the extremely niche field of nuclear forensics, before examining the theories surrounding the use of nuclear weapons and the development of the nuclear taboo. Chapter four will present two possible scenarios of an unauthorized detonation and the likely consequences. In brief, the conclusion of this thesis is that the overall change in geopolitics post-detonation will depend on multiple factors, namely what nation is attacked, from which nation the nuclear material or weapon was obtained, if the weapon or material was readily handed over to the terror group or if it was stolen, and what nation is either intentionally or unintentionally harboring the terror group. The most severe consequences, of course, would occur if the weapon was intentionally provided to a terror group by a nation that was also knowingly harboring the terrorists, as it would be a nuclear strike by proxy.pl
Następnie zbadamy podstawy techniczne broni jądrowej, różne rodzaje broni, metody rozmieszczenia i historię proliferacji nuklearnej. W rozdziale trzecim przed zbadaniem teorii dotyczących użycia broni nuklearnej i rozwoju nuklearnego tabu, przeanalizujemy obecny stan terroryzmu nuklearnego, kontrterroryzmu, specyficzną terminologię nuklearną odnoszącą się do kontrterroryzmu nuklearnego oraz niezwykle niszową dziedzinę kryminalistyki nuklearnej. W rozdziale czwartym przedstawimy dwa możliwe scenariusze nieautoryzowanej detonacji i prawdopodobne konsekwencje.
