Culture of alcohol consumption in the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth

Niniejsza praca analizuje i opisuje kulturę spożywania alkoholu przez szlachtę w dawnej Rzeczpospolitej w okresie od XVII do początku II połowy XVIII wieku. Przedstawia gatunki alkoholu jakie wówczas można było znaleźć na szlacheckich stołach oraz zarys ich historii. Ówczesna kultura picia składała się z barwnych zwyczajów, zaczynając od gościnności a kończąc na toastach i różnych zabawach pijackich. Autor skupia się na opisaniu ich wszystkich. Praca porusza też temat zastosowania alkoholu w różnych dziedzinach życia, takich jak medycyna, kuchnia czy kosmetyka, wraz z przykładami. Na końcu przedstawia także skutki spożywania alkoholu, podaje choroby krótkotrwałe oraz długotrwałe, takie jak podagra czy miażdżyca. Praca opiera się głównie na pamiętnikach, diariuszach i wspomnieniach szlachty oraz na opracowaniach dotyczących obyczajów staropolskich.

This paper analyzes and describes the culture of alcohol consumption by the nobility in the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the period from the 17th to the beginning of the second half of the 18th century. It presents the types of alcohol that could then be found on noble tables and an outline of their history. The drinking culture of that time consisted of colorful habits, starting with hospitality and ending with toasts and various drinking games. The author focuses on describing all of them. The paper also deals with the use of alcohol in various areas of life, such as medicine, cooking and cosmetics, along with examples. At the end, it also presents the effects of alcohol consumption, short-term and long-term diseases, such as gout or atherosclerosis. The paper is based mainly on the diaries and memoirs of the nobility as well as studies on Old Polish customs.
