The main focus of the article is the process of building a new Ruthenian intellectual centre around the Orthodox Dormition Confraternity in Lviv, a process that was largely driven by the publishing activities of this centre. The texts published during the first period of its existence (up to 1616), together with the commentaries contained in the paratextual framework of these works, reveal a carefully planned process of strengthening the Confraternity. The community cultivated good relations with the Metropolitan of Kyiv and the Eastern hierarchs, which was particularly important in the context of the conflict with the local bishop Gedeon, and especially during the period following the outlawing of Orthodoxy after the Union of Brest (1596). The development of the educational programme also depended on the availability of suitable staff. For this reason, prominent Ruthenian writers, translators, hellenists and Greek literati, known for their collaboration with other educational and publishing centres (Ostroh, Vilnius and Stratyn), were recruited. A number of works serving educational purposes were published, aimed at educating children and young people (including primers and grammars), as well as at shaping adult educators, who were crucial to strengthening the Ruthenian community in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and enabling it to participate more fully in the social life of this multiethnic and multiconfessional state. It was in the Lviv Stauropegion Confraternity that the first work in the Kyivan Metropolitanate devoted entirely to the proper education of children and young people was produced, while also serving as a guide for parents (1609). This translated work was not coincidentally focused on making the writings of the Church Fathers, above all John Chrysostom, which had enjoyed centuries-long authority, available to a wider readership. The paratexts, in turn, encouraged readers to pursue education, which at the time was understood in two complementary ways: the acquisition of knowledge and the cultivation of piety. The activities of the Lviv confraternity centre—its texts and authors—subsequently provided the foundation for the emergence of the most important intellectual and religious centre in Kyiv.
