Role of women in Confucian family model in China in the imperial period

Celem pracy jest zbadanie ról pełnionych przez kobiety w konfucjańskim modelu rodziny w Chinach w okresie cesarskim. Praca zawiera opis podstawowych założeń konfucjanizmu oraz koncepcji dotyczących pozycji kobiet w społeczeństwie. Opisuje role i pozycje kobiet jako córek oraz sposób ich kształcenia, a także kwestię wejścia w związek małżeński. Określa sytuację i obowiązki kobiet jako żon, matek, a także konkubin. Omawia kwestie związane z macierzyństwem. Praca ta zawiera również opis sytuacji wdów i kobiet nie wpisujących się w konfucjański model rodziny. Wyjaśnia fenomen ideału cnotliwych wdów. Opisuje sytuacje w jakich dopuszczano do przerwania związku małżeńskiego. Praca ukazuje, że kobiety pełniły w tym okresie w Chinach istotne role i niejednokrotnie same miały wpływ na ich kształtowanie.

The aim of the thesis is to study the roles played by women in Confucian family model in China in the imperial period. The thesis contains a description of basic Confucian principles and concepts regarding women’s position in the society. It describes women’s role and position as daughters and the way of educating them, as well as the issue of entering into a marriage. It defines situation and duties of women as wives, mothers and also concubines. It discusses issues related to motherhood. This thesis also contains a description of the situation of widows and women who did not fit into the Confucian family model. It explains the phenomenon of the ideal of widow chastity. It describes situations in which ending of a marriage was allowed. The thesis shows that women in that period played important roles in China and many times had influence on their shaping.
