On the other hand, while she is judged harshly, her government is positively seen by the Brits. There is a vast amount of research concerning Margaret Thatcher and her road to victory in the general election. However, research concerning historical background as well as effects of her reforms and their film representation is scarce. Addressing this gap the thesis “The Portrayal of 1984 Miners’ Strike in Stephen Daldry’s Billy Elliot and Matthew Warchus Pride” analyses historical events, which led to Thatcher’s victory as well as the relationship between trade unions and governments of Edward Heath and Harold Wilson. The thesis inspects the impact of the Falklands War and the media on the general public and Margaret Thatcher popularity standings. The second area of study is the 1984 miners’ strike. In order to examine the perception and portrayal of the strike this research discusses two films: Billy Elliot by Stephen Daldry and Pride by Matthew Warchus. Three main themes analysed in the thesis are: portrayal of the police during the strike, masculinity and gender, and feeling of solidarity. This research provides a holistic view on 1984 miners’ strike and Margaret Thatcher policy.
