Literature's other dimensions. A movable book as an example of intermedium

Książka przestrzenna, choć współcześnie kojarzona przede wszystkim z wydawnictwami przeznaczonymi dla najmłodszych, jest medium, które tradycyjnie zastosowanie znajdowało na wielu innych polach. W epoce renesansu w tej formie wydawane były między innymi podręczniki do nawigacji, atlasy anatomiczne i interaktywne map od końca wieku XVIII adaptacje sztuk teatralnych, a niecałe stulecie później również tomiki poezji oraz eksperymentalne powieści. Cechą wspólną tego typu dzieł – niezależnie od tego, kiedy powstały i na jakich formach bazowały – było to, że pojawiały się przede wszystkim tam, gdzie mało efektywna okazywała się tradycyjnie rozumiana narracja, starając się zastąpić ją przekazem intermedialnym. Niniejsza praca ma na celu wykazać potencjał książki przestrzennej jako alternatywnego nośnika literatury.

A movable book, even though nowadays associated mostly with children's literature, is a medium that traditionally used to be applied in many different fields. In the Renaissance era it served for producing nautical guidebooks, anatomical atlases and interactive maps, by the end of the 18th century for adapting theatrical plays and, just a century later, for creating books of poems and experimental novels. A common feature of all these works - regardless of their form or the time when they were issued - was that they tended to appear whenever a traditional narration had failed and tried to substitute it with an intermedial communicate. This work's aim is to demonstrate movable book's potential as an alternative support for literature.
