Security of Poland in the XXI Century – geopolitical aspect

Położenie państwa, jego fizyczne warunki, sąsiedztwo, zasoby naturalne i ludzkie czy istnienie naturalnych granic wywiera wpływ na bezpieczeństwo kraju w XXI wieku. Pomimo wzrostu znaczenia trendów: globalizacji i rozwoju technologii, postrzeganie bezpieczeństwa przez pryzmat kategorii geopolitycznych jest nadal aktualne. W pracy tej opisano wybrane obszary zainteresowania tej nauki: położenie, współpracę międzynarodową w ramach regionalnych ugrupowań czy próbę analizy szans i zagrożeń dla Polski, wynikających zarówno z jego umiejscowienia, jak i dostępu do surowców energetycznych. Analiza treści literatury tematycznej, dokumentów, danych statystycznych wskazała na potrzebę dalszego wykorzystania osiągnięć geopolityki i jej badaczy. Na początku pracy nastąpiła próba wyjaśnienia terminologii tej nauki oraz przedstawienie sytuacji Polski pod koniec XX wieku. Podjęta wówczas reorientacja polityki na Zachód skutkuje postrzeganiem bezpieczeństwa państwa w oparciu o członkostwo w Sojuszu Północnoatlantyckim oraz współpracę w ramach struktur europejskich. Zmiana sytuacji międzynarodowej u progu XXI wieku skutkowała powiększeniem się liczby państw sąsiednich Polski. W pracy pojawia się wątek istnienia niepodległej Ukrainy i próba wyjaśnienia dlaczego jest to ważne dla zabezpieczenia interesów Warszawy. Dogodne usytuowanie Rzeczypospolitej w Europie Środkowo Wschodniej i dostęp do Morza Bałtyckiego daje szanse na wzmocnienie niezależności od dostaw surowców energetycznych oraz możliwość włączenia się w chiński projekt Nowego Jedwabnego Szlaku.

The location of the state, its physical conditions, neighborhood, natural and human resources, or the existence of natural borders have an impact on the country's security in the XXI Century. Despite the growing importance of trends: globalization and technology development, the perception of security through the prism of geopolitical categories is still valid. This paper describes selected areas of interest for this science: location, international cooperation within regional groups or an attempt to analyze the opportunities and threats for Poland, resulting both from its location and access to energy resources. The analysis of the content of the thematic literature, documents and statistical data indicated the need for further use of the achievements of geopolitics and its researchers. At the beginning of the work there was an attempt to explain the terminology of this science and to present the situation of Poland at the end of the 20th century. The reorientation of the policy towards the West, which was then undertaken, results in the perception of state security on the basis of membership in the North Atlantic Alliance and cooperation within European structures. The change in the international situation at the threshold of the XXI century resulted in an increase in the number of Poland's neighboring countries. The work presents the theme of the existence of an independent Ukraine and an attempt to explain why it is important for securing the interests of Warsaw. The convenient location of the Republic of Poland in Central and Eastern Europe and access to the Baltic Sea provide an opportunity to strengthen independence from energy supplies and the possibility of joining the Chinese project of the New Silk Road.
