“It is awful. It is disgusting”. Eristic strategies in the statements of contemporary clergymen to the faithful

Niniejsza praca udowadnia, że duchowni stosują chwyty erystyczne w swoich wypowiedziach do wiernych, by w jakiś sposób nimi manipulować. W części teoretycznej pracy omówiono zagadnienia teorii retoryki homiletycznej związane z jej historią i funkcjami, przede wszystkim funkcją perswazyjną, następnie także jej ujęcie w teorii retoryki klasycznej. Opisano także zagadnienia perswazyjnej strony autorytetu kaznodziei oraz kazania jako elementu rytuału. Kolejna część pracy poświęcona jest w całości erystyce – jej historii i klasycznej definicji, chwytom erystycznym za Arturem Schopenhauerem oraz współczesnej definicji, którą autorka pracy przyjmuje. Ostatni rozdział skupia się na analizie wypowiedzi duchownych pod kątem chwytów erystycznych, przeprowadzonej na podstawie dwudziestu trzech wybranych nagrań publicznych wypowiedzi duchownych w różnych sytuacjach.

The aim of the present thesis is to prove, that clergymen use eristic strategies in theirs statements to the faithful to manipulate them in some way. In theoretical part were disscused issues of the theory of homiletic rhetoric, related to its history, functions, especially the persuasive function, then also its approach to the theory of classical rhetoric. The issues of the persuasive side of the preacher’s authority and the sermon as an element of ritual are also described. The next part of the work is devoted entirely to eristics - its history and classical definition, eristic strategies defined by Arthur Schopenhauer and the contemporary definition adopted by the author of the work. The last chapter focuses on the analysis of clergymen statements in terms of eristic strategies, conducted on the basis of twenty-three selected recordings of public statements by clergymen in various situations.
