Photography as a medium of memory. The possibility of a remembrance of the Holocaust

Celem niniejszej pracy jest pokazanie funkcji, jakie pełni fotografia rozumiana jako medium pamięci oraz zaprezentowanie możliwości wykorzystania tego medium w kształtowaniu pamięci Holokaustu.Głównym wnioskiem pracy jest stwierdzenie, że kluczowe dla właściwego odczytu znaczeń obrazu są kompetencje jego odbiorcy: umiejętność umieszczenia obrazu we właściwym kontekście, nie tylko historycznym, ale także otwartość na inne niż wiedza wartości niesione za jego pośrednictwem. Pokazano też, że znaczenie dowolnej fotografii podlega ciągłym zmianom.

The aim of the present thesis is to describe photography as a medium of memory and to present how photography can be used as a medium for Holocaust memory.The principal conclusion was that the key condition to properly read the meaning of a picture is the capacity of its reader: the skill to find the right (not only historical) context as well as the ability to recognize values other than knowledge that can be transferred by the medium.The thesis also demonstrates that the meaning of any photograph is constantly shifting.
