The Role of Silence in Nora by Elfriede Jelinek

Praca dotyczy problemu milczenia. W pierwszej części omówione zostają trzy koncepcje milczenia: Izydory Dąbskiej, Martina Heideggera i Ludwika Wittgensteina. Część ta ma charakter samodzielnego namysłu nad problemem, ale pełni też funkcję przygotowawczą dla działań podjętych w drugiej części, która dotyczy Nory Elfriede Jelinek. Ramę owej części wyznacza odpowiedź na pytanie dotyczące możliwości "tematyzacji milczenia", o której wspomina w jednym z wywiadów Jelinek. Wczesny dramat austriackiej noblistki zostaje zinterpretowany w świetle wyżej wspomnianych słów.

The paper concerns the problem of silence. In the first part, three concepts of silence are discussed: Izydora Dąbska's, Martin Heidegger's and Ludwig Wittgenstein's. This part is in the nature of independent reflection on the problem, but it also has a preparatory function for the activities undertaken in the second part, which concerns Nora by Elfriede Jelinek. The answer to the question about the possibility of "tematisation of silence" mentioned in one of Jelinek's interviews marks the frame of this part of the paper. The early drama of the Austrian Nobel Prize winner is interpreted in the light of the above-mentioned words.
