Śmierć jest najbardziej intymnym, a zarazem najbardziej naturalnym wydarzeniem w życiu człowieka. Jest tematem, który wszystkich fascynuje, ale równocześnie jeszcze bardziej przeraża, dlatego staramy się go nie podejmować. Jednakże jego głównym tematem jest przedstawienie kryzysu światopoglądowego oraz pogodzenia się z losem Jana Kochanowskiego na przykładzie jego Trenów. Omówiona została reakcja ojcowska na śmierć ukochanego dziecka, jej wszystkie etapy i ich wpływ na światopogląd i twórczość autora, aż do całkowitego zaakceptowania i pogodzenia się z zaistniałą sytuacją. W niniejszym rozdziale zostały opisane wszystkie treny, ale nauczyciel do omówienia tematu może wykorzystać tylko niektóre z nich, a o pozostałych tylko ogólnie wspomnieć.
