Strategie w tłumaczeniu i redakcji tekstu na podstawie analizy polskich wydań Gry o Tron George’a R. R. Martina

Gra o Tron stanowi pierwszą część sagi fantasy Pieśń Lodu i Ognia autorstwa George’a R.R. Martina. W Polsce po raz pierwszy ukazała się ona w przekładzie Pawła Kruka, nakładem wydawnictwa Zysk i S-ka w 1998 roku. Z powodu braku edycji przed publikacją, książka zawierała sporo błędów w tłumaczeniu, co zrodziło negatywne recenzje. Pięć lat później ten sam wydawca zlecił zadanie opracowania zredagowanej wersji Gry o Tron Michałowi Jakuszewskiemu, który w międzyczasie zdążył przetłumaczyć następne tomy Pieśni Lodu i Ognia. Zadanie tłumacza obejmowało korektę błędów popełnionych w pierwszym wydaniu, a także ujednolicenie terminologii przyjętej w pierwszej części tak, aby była ona zgodna z kolejnymi tomami, które do tamtej pory zostały wydane.Przedmiotem niniejszego badania była analiza rozmaitych poprawek wprowadzonych w zredagowanej wersji książki oraz ich przyczyn. W tym celu jako punkt odniesienia przyjęto listę dwunastu parametrów redakcji w ujęciu Briana Mossopa oraz zastosowano program LF Aligner jako narzędzie służące do przeprowadzenia analizy porównawczej tekstu źródłowego z dwoma tekstami docelowymi. Klasyfikacja błędów w tłumaczeniu sporządzona przez Krzysztofa Hejwowskiego umożliwiła zidentyfikowanie problemów, które stały się przedmiotem korekty.Analiza opisana w niniejszej pracy wykazała, że redakcja polskiego wydania Gry o Tron była dokonana w pełnym stopniu i obejmowała różne aspekty korekty. Ponieważ została przeprowadzona na poziomie treści, języka i stylu, miała znaczący wpływ na tekst. W pewnym momencie zauważono, że redaktor zignorował zasadę umiaru w ingerencji w warstwę tekstową, wprowadzając istotne zmiany w niektórych fragmentach książki. Niemniej jednak, recepcja poprawionego przekładu dowodzi, że większość interwencji była konieczna i uzasadniona.

A Game of Thrones is the first part of an epic fantasy saga A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin. It was first translated into Polish by Paweł Kruk and published by Zysk i S-ka in 1998. Owing to the lack of editing, the book contained numerous translation errors, which provoked critic reviews. Five years later, the same publisher commissioned Michał Jakuszewski, who had already translated consecutive volumes of A Song of Ice and Fire, to perform a revision of A Game of Thrones in order to amend the flaws of its first translation. Jakuszewski’s task also involved making the text consistent with the remaining parts of the saga, which had been published in the meantime.The purpose of this case study was to investigate different types of changes introduced by the reviser in the Polish version of the book and the reasons behind them. To this end, the twelve revision parameters outlined by Brian Mossop were adopted as the frame of reference, while the programme LF Aligner served as the tool to perform the comparative analysis of the source text and the two target texts. The classification of translation errors by Krzysztof Hejwowski was used to identify the mistakes found in the book and amended in the revised version.The analysis proved that the revision of the Polish edition of A Game of Thrones was full and included various types of editing routines. As it was performed on the level of the content, language and style, it had a significant impact on the text. At some point, it was noticed that the reviser made numerous changes in the already existing wording, disobeying the rule of balance in revision. However, the reception of the revised version suggests that his interventions were in most cases necessary and reasonable.
